Tidal waves are formed by a surge of water be forced toward the sea coast. Out in the Deep sea you don't see any waves cause the force of water just pushes more water creating pressure as that pressure comes closer to the shore and it becomes more shallow. The water has no where to go but up and away from the origin of the pressure (ie erupting volcano).
