Well it would definitely kill any sea life near there. You could probably go near the area after the eruption and find pre-cooked seafood floating on top.

I think tidal waves are caused when the plates slip not when volcanos errupt, I may be wrong though.

Tidal waves are formed by a surge of water be forced toward the sea coast. Out in the Deep sea you don't see any waves cause the force of water just pushes more water creating pressure as that pressure comes closer to the shore and it becomes more shallow. The water has no where to go but up and away from the origin of the pressure (ie erupting volcano). So a tidal wave is formed as it gets closer to the shore line.
