| 2nd IP address
I'm moving soon and I'm thinking about ordering High-Speed Xtreme-I. It says it allows for 2 IP addresses.
What are some scenarios where this would be advantageous?

Um... maybe if you wanted two completely separate internal networks... or if you wanted to put a server or your Xbox outside of the router...

Heh... yeah, you're not going to get increased bandwidth from that... but yeah... you'll need a switch. |

If you want to set up a web server/server of some sort away from your home network. No speed advantage though.

to the OP: A normal user won't need to make use of both IP addresses.. just stick to the normal setup.

^Or just change your router's MAC address and it will pull a new IP

in the days before common routers, (5-10 years ago) everyone used hubs with multiple IP's. Telus used to give 5 IP's.
today for the avg user, there is no need for more then one as people use routers instead.

when i worked for shaw, we used to get calls about this all the time, the only time a 2nd ip is handy is if you had a hub or a switch, or you took the network cable out of one computer and plugged it into a 2nd computer or game console so that you didn't get an ip conflict.

As people above said, most users these days won't take advantage of the second IP, unless they want to seperate their network, or don't have a router, or rapidshare lol.
But if you really wanted to know how two IP's can be utilized, this is how my setup is.
IP #1 - Connected with a Sonicwall firewall followed by a switch
Small business server/webserver/exchange server
IP #2 - Connected with a Wireless Router
Personal Computer, Laptops for when friends bring theirs over, PS3
What this does is keeps my business network seperate from my personal network, so if for any reason one of my networks were compromised, it won't affect the other network.
hope that clears it up a bit.

Yeah, back at my former company, we set it up such that we had an external wifi router where we can let outsiders have access to the Internet, but not our internal network.
