Manitoba man found in Mexican manhole, burned and missing wallet

BRANDON, Man. — A Manitoba man is recovering from serious burns to much of his body after he was injured under suspicious circumstances on the first day of a vacation in Mexico.

Clinton Waldon, 26, was one of 14 friends from Rapid City, Man., who arrived in Cancun on March 7 for the start of a weeklong holiday.

Within 24 hours, Waldon would find himself in a concrete hole outside a Mexican club, surrounded by electrical cables and suffering burns to his upper chest, arms, neck and back.

He has no memory of how he got there.

"It could have been much worse," Waldon's father Don said Thursday. "That's the one thing you gotta think."

The last thing Clinton remembers is that he and two of his friends were having a few drinks at one nightclub when they became separated.

Don says he was told days after the incident that Mexican mobsters who own clubs in the district routinely steal power for their bars by tearing the doors off transformer boxes and hooking up jumper cables.

Don doubts his son, who is 6'2" and 220 pounds, fell into the hole he woke up in.

Don says that when his son touched the live wires, it knocked out the electrical power to three city blocks.

When ambulance attendants arrived, Waldon's wallet and shoes were missing, and his shirt had been completely burned off.

Waldon is back in Canada and is currently recovering from his burns at Winnipeg's Health Sciences Centre.

i was just in cancun last month, and heard alot of tourists gets robbed at gun point while in Club bathrooms, and the worst part is, its mostly the bathroom attendant or he is involved, judging on how drunk or how wimpy the victim is.
