TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - A day after announcing plans to cut as many as 800 jobs, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation said Thursday it will cancel "The Simpsons" and "The Martha Stewart Show" in a cost-cutting maneuver.

The public broadcaster also said it will lower license fees and order fewer episodes of such popular Canadian TV series as "The Border," "Being Erica," and "Little Mosque on the Prairie" to deal with a growing advertising downturn.

Other savings will come from the cancellation of daytime lifestyle series, a cut in expenditures on daytime kids' programing and the end of some sports programing, including Toronto Blue Jays games.

The CBC also will cut 80 jobs at its CBC News division.

On the radio side, the national broadcaster will cancel some popular radio shows as well as reduce regional radio noontime shows to one hour and live music recordings by half.

The_AK 03-27-2009 12:38 PM

cbc has just lost a viewer.

RTS 03-27-2009 12:55 PM

CBC is a joke for the most part. I really hope the HOUR is gone.

I would just keep the CBC news and Hockey Night in Canada.

because the conservatives have long wanted to destroy the cbc they took careful steps to create and allow for funding problems which could have easily been avoided. they want to destroy cbc radio by injecting advertising and set up a situation where the cbc could be forced to accept it to stay afloat

aznrsx1979 03-27-2009 02:19 PM

Damn....I used to watch Blue Jays games on CBC all the time.

hows the tinfoil hat fit? does it react with your mincrowave?

Harvey Specter 03-27-2009 02:56 PM

Where can I buy this "mincrowave"?

rslater 03-27-2009 07:40 PM

CBC has gotten over a billion dollars from the federal government every year, but only makes 600 million in Revenue. It doesn't profit. What do you really except the government to do?

CivicTypeRice 03-27-2009 07:52 PM

They should sell the CBC network to another company

Tim Budong 03-27-2009 08:12 PM

I believe The Hour is the only decent produced thing i've watched on the CBC...
George Strompolopolus is probably the better hosts on television to attract a younger audience, when he speaks, people do listen.

johny 03-27-2009 08:43 PM

the CBC received just as much in government money and extra bonuses etc this year as it does every year. Why should more of my tax paying money go to keep them afloat...

they need to cut down spending and lay off like every other company in Canada to try and stay afloat.

or maybe we should give millions of tax money to every failing businesses in Canada? we'll see how that works. when we're 3 trillion in debt.

tiger_handheld 03-27-2009 09:55 PM

didn it say somewhere CBC burned 1mil per day .. 365mil per year??
or was that DTES?

soo many millions, lost track of it all. as long as its not a quadrillion, i'm good - feel bad for the poor suckers who sweat over a million...

why is it you believe my opinion to be of the tinfoil hat type? is it the conservative anti-cbc thing? its no secret conservative governments have long seen the CBC as a thorn in its side and made attempts to dismantle it. Harper himself, in january 2008 appointed Hubert Lacroix as president of CBC. and why would he do this when he had no prior experience running and sustaining a corporation? because he is a mergers and aquisitions lawyer with a history of dismantling companies. his closest related experience would be as executive chair of TeleMedia during the period when that family–controlled company sold off its broadcasting properties. as to the assertion that cbc radio has been asked to consider advertising - James Moore very recently suggested just that. so perhaps you should take the tinfoil hat and do something ignorant with it like cooking it in your mincrowave.
