Where to buy a road bike?

Looking for a commuter/road bike to get to/from work, no offroad, I'll buy a dedicated trail bike later.

Any advice on brands to buy?

Need 59cm frame at least, I'm 6'2".
Would prefer not to spend > $1000, including helmet, mud guards, ...
Would prefer to buy used, its a bike, no need to buy new when I can get a better bike for less.

I was hoping at least one member on here had some advice of where are the best prices, best service, ... you know, the same questions we ask when buying a car.

Now GTFO.

Mighty Riders
Corner of Broadway and Ontario
talk to Ed, he has a werid sense of humor, so dont take it the wrong way if he tells u to fuck off and come back when he is not busy

but he is a very knowledgeable guy, and carries bikes (road and mountain) from $600 and up

I would check craigslist... =) are you sure you want a road bike as a commuter ??? I've been told that htey are very uncomfortable.. i am riding a brodie voltage.. it's a hybrid.. although its not as fast as a road bike... i've come to like it.... its not expensive enough for me to worry about someone ripping it off... but it is nice enough in terms of ride comfort =)

My size is difficult to find used (6'2" + 35.5" inseem == 59-60cm bike). Seems there's a lot of shorter people in Vancouver.

I've had a hybrid and want to try a road bike. Thus why I want to buy used, if I don't like it, I'll sell it for not much of a loss.

I have a bike room at home and at work. I will rarely use this outside of commuting, prefer running and blading.

try calling Simon's bike shop downtown

taylor192 04-07-2009 06:09 AM

Thanks all.

I found a size 59 Brodie Infinity on Craigslist. Definitely happier with the bigger bike, and happy to save $100+ of taxes!

Now I need to change out the pedals, damn these ones are on there good. My longest ratchet with an allen key socket couldn't break them (and yes I know the threads are reversed on either side!). Going to have to get a shop to swap them.

You end up buying the Infinity? I'm sure you'll be very happy with the Infinity, just make sure the bolts are tight. (bolts tend to loosen off when riding)

Yep, and very happy with it!

Almost 1/2 price and no tax! Even better.

Giant makes great commuter bikes. FCR series is a good place to start.

BSP, SnowCovers, Dizzy Cycles are all specialty shops that will point you in the right direction.

mc25 05-07-2009 01:35 PM

I second Giant...had a bike from them last a looong time. Ill probably be in the market for a road bike soon as well

the_rickster 05-07-2009 02:06 PM

and then when you fall in love with riding:

speedtheory.ca

the_rickster 05-09-2009 09:42 AM

fuuuuck, i was in snowcovers yesterday.... wicked deals on 07, '08 bikes. half price.
