mountain bikers, help choosing a used bike! Which one? http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/439689/ or http://buysell.nsmb.com/showproduct..../21992/cat/all Both users say that drive conditions are pretty smooth. In the case of the 2001 slayer, the drivetrain was replaced a year ago. I pretty much ride Burnaby Mountain. I'd like to a little bit of mild xc and try a few more burlier trails like Burke mtn. What do you guys think I should get? And what price should I offer on the bike? I don't want to lowball, but I'd like a fair price. I don't know enough about mountian bikes to find a fair price (or if they are overpriced). I'm willing to shell out a bit more for quality and durablity, but I don't know if the cheaper bike will have a similar performance to the other bike. I'll take other suggestions as well. TIA |
The 1st bike is over priced. The second bike is ancient in terms of the parts on it. Pass on both and keep looking. |
^ thanks man. |
http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/424804/ no front fork and probably no front brakes, but not too bad for $500 this isnt bad either http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/290137/ dunno about your size though |
the norco 6 that volvo posted is a pretty good buy, i use to have one of those back in the day until i got a bullit |
both bikes that volvo posted are gonna be close to or more then 40+ lbs. not very well suited for XC, but you say only a little XC so the heavy bike may not bother you very much. Depends on your level of fitness and how much uphill riding you wish to do :) whats your max budget? I find the the really really sweet deals on used bikes start @ around 1500 bux. 1/2 years old and typically in great shape. One thing to keep in mind is that the older the bike is, the cheaper but also heavier its gonna be. I just helped a buddy of mine buy a used bike... He picked up a 07 Hectik 2 for 1700 bux that was in fantastic shape and barely ridden. Probably more then u wanna spend, and also more bike then u seem to be interested in, but there are great deals on used bikes. Think at least 50% off retail for anything 1/2 years old. |
ahhh yes...weight OP : if you want all XC and weight matters, a hardtail may be the answer to you or switch over to the dark side where gravity and momentum does all your work once u go DH / freeride, you will never go back ! |
thanks to volvo and jeffk for their posts. what do you guys think about this bike? 2007 Norco Fluid 3.0 for 800$ http://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/436456/ |
by the way... i'd really like to keep my budget at 1000 max. and i like more chill rides over freeriding |
how tall are you ? the norco isn't bad...msrp was $1799 back in the day off topic, its been noted on pink bike before, but i think the seller is a total scam artist selling stolen goods see http://www.ctv.ca/servlet/ArticleNew...4?hub=Business that being the case, be careful because if you buy stolen goods, the cops can seize it from you and you are out $800 |
the fluids always get good reviews. I have an 04 fluid 3 that has been pimped out to all my friends to get them hooked on riding :) here's another fluid... but a fluid 1 so the parts spec is alot nicer: http://buysell.nsmb.com/showproduct.php?product=20035 and no shady dealings with the bike rescue :) |
i'm about 5'5. so would you recommend choosing the fluid 1 over the fluid 3? thanks for the heads up on bikerescue. not sure if i'd like to deal with someone who has charges in each province. |
yer fairly short so i think the small would fit better then the 16" (medium?) of the fluid 3. i'd say go check out the small, see if it fits and how you like it. make yer choice after you've seen the bike and ridden it around the parking lot a bit |
thanks man. i plan on checking it out later today. i guess $800 is a good price to pay? how should i go about doing this? is there anything on the bike i should look for? like signs of wear in what places kind of thing. what should i ask him about the bike in general? |
you can check for cracks around the welds whens the last time the brake pads were changed, how old is the drive train (chain, rings, cassette). he says the fork was serviced lately so thats good make sure it shifts through all the gears nicely, stops well and just feels 'nice' |

brakes rotors and pads = cheap ($15 for no name rotors, $20 for pads ) stand in front of the bike, squeeze the front wheel between your legs and try to twist the handlebars...if there is a lot of play, or it wobbles, or it rattles , check to see if its loose if not, make the owner tighten it / adjust it. if he can't get rid of the play you may need a new headset and those go for $150+ like mentioned earlier, check to see if there are any cracks along all the seams and welds check for play / wobble for the wheels themselves + the pedal cranks complete wheels = $90, hubs alone = $70+ a piece, cranks + bottom bracket = $200+ |
i got a 06 brodie thumper frame for sale green used for 1 season comes with manitou metal R coil if i can find the handle bar and stem ill throw those in all for 300 |
thanks for the advice guys. i bought the fluid 1. feels good brah. |
