Allergies.... Whos got them??? What pills do you use???

Its that time of the season... Who here has a stuffed up nose... Its freaking killing me everday at 2am I wake up with a plugged nose and have to take allergy pills just to feel better...

Anyone recommend a allergy pill that lasts all day??? Ive been taking Aerius but they are freaking expensive especially if I have to take 2-3 a day...

Does anyone know if you have to get a prescription for flonase?

I use to use claritin 24 hour relief but that got expensive so I tried reactine, cheap and does the job, for me at least.

Most people swear by claritin though, some say reactine doesn't work for them, but it does for me.

I've used all of the above, its all the same to me. Some days it feels like none of them cut it though. What works the best is blow your nose REALLY well, spray some otrivin into both nostrils then take a 2 hour nap

I bought some aerius today... never taken anything before. this year seems to be worse then past years for me.

the pills will hopefully be cheaper then the 2-3 boxes of keenex a day I'm going through now. (espesilly since it says take one per day. Dragon is taking 3??...)

Yeah 2 years back I did a summer job grass cutting @ chevron refinery and I almost had to quite i felt like dyeing. Anyways went to a doc back then and recommended me taking 2 a day.. not a big deal he said. Plus there are some people out there who take 3-4 t3's in one session... now thats crazy...
Screw kleenex I use good ol TP, 2 ply......

Can someone tell me what "otrivin" is. Is that something like flonase???
I always found flonase to work but I dont wnat to have to go to a doctor just to get a prescription on a allergy drug...

Claritin 24 hr relief for me too. But I'm scared that the relief will wear off and then I'll have to switch to another brand.

Recently I've been using flonase instead (yes I think you need a prescription), and unlike popping a tiny white pill, shooting & snorting this stuff up my nose makes me feel like a total druggie.

i switch brands every year....
i cycle between all the big ones mentioned in this thread already...

I find if i stick with the same brand for too long, it doesn't work anymore.

And surprisingly, my allergies haven't acted up this year yet...mine are usually pretty bad.

Flonase and Nasonex are corticosteroids which surpress the body's reaction to allergens. They don't really provide immediate relief but gradually build. I use Nasonex for a few days when i'm really bad and then stop once my symptoms become managable.

Otrivin is a topical spray which constricts the blood vessels and stops the flow of mucus in your nose. This gives you immediate relief but is really only effective for a few hours before you need another spray. Good for getting to sleep at night, but i wouldn't overuse it (i.e. more than 3 days)

All that being said, talk to your doctor for professional advice.

Is otrivin a over the counter spray or do I need a prescription just like flonase... I need something to stop my plugged/runny nose when i wake up @ 2 am... This has been going on for the last 2 weeks and starting to kill my sleepy time.... I need a spray that i can get without prescription.

Otrivin is over the counter. You can buy it at any pharmacy.

i don't use any pills.

if you wake up and you're nose is stuffed to the roof. chances are you are allergic to the dust in your room. ESPECIALLY from your bed and pillow.

1. change your bed (buy those hypoallergenic covers for your bed and pillow)
2. change your pillows
3. change your bed sheets.

4. get a humidifier. i guarantee this will help your morning stuffy-ness.
i swear, i just put one in my room the other day and i can already notice the difference. i still have a stuffy nose, but i'm sure after a couple weeks my room will be pretty "fresh"

5. probably the only FIX get the "shot"
i have been putting this off for soo long.. i went in and found out i was allergic to almost everything on the damn scratch test. so i got a perscription for the shots.. but it's been over 6 months and i still haven't went in to get it...

my dose is ONCE a week for 9-12 months EVERY WEEK. and if i miss a week i have to restart or retake a dosage.. very gay...
but this, i was told from the doctor is the best way to get rid of my allergies.. and if it doesn't get rid of them completely, the doctor said it will greatly help the cause...

Costco sells a generic clariten. It is the same ingredient. It is like $15 for 100 pills.

I'm using Benedryl pink pills which are 50 for $10 at Costco. It works but wears off after a few hours and it makes me sleepy.
