Well you're supposed to pay for 2 zones if you're travelling by bus anyways. From what i understand, the zone coverage doesn't change whether you travel by bus or skytrain, so maybe you're just lucky if they don't check/tell you to buy 2 zones if your going to metrotown by bus

Robertson admits to unpaid SkyTrain fine
Vancouver mayoral hopeful Gregor Robertson says he has yet to pay a $173 fine for accidentally riding two SkyTrain zones on a one-zone fare because he wants to draw attention to what he calls unreasonably high fines.

Yea read the stats in the link.
And I know that number of fare evasions is low. It's higher than that.
those are just "Recorded" fare evasions.

those are just "Recorded" fare evasions. | Think of all the extra revenue translink can make with gates at skytrain stations.

I've never seen transit officers board buses.. Haha that's some tough luck though..
And I'm pretty sure the only reason it's "free" is to help speed up the process of people boarding so the driver can take off

I take the 99 b-line 2x5=10 times a week, and so far I've only seen transit officers checking for fares twice since Sept 2007 till today..

I would say that I see them roughly once or twice each semester on the 99 and like once a week on the skytrain. HOWEVER, never during peak hours.
Its sad how many people pay $100 for a ticket to a canucks game, like $8 for beers and then not pay the $3 fee to get home....

Does it actually say how many zones on your transfer or monthly pass? But how could they tell when the person got on the bus to enforce the zones?

Transfers on the back (as well as encoded on the card) have it written what zone, what time, and how many zones it can go to, also the type. (Concession, adult)
Example, transfer issued in vancouver, it'll say zone of issue "1", and valid for 3 zones to surrey and farther, 2 zones for richmond/burnaby.
Fare cards are colored differently for zones as well as having a scratch off part for zones originating zone.
there are actually over 200 different ways to pay for fare.
Including, badges (police forces are free rides), CNIB cards, West Coast Express tickets are also valid as transfers, government issue passes, employee passes, etc.
