Brakes on the G35 Coupe I'm considering buying a second hand G35 coupe and i was wondering what year i should get. now something very important to me is a good braking system especially since i'll be getting larger wheels. Anyhow i'm looking at 03-06 but 03-04 has the optional Brembo Brakes and the 05-06 doesn't. Now the difference from some reading i've done is that the 05-06 has larger rotors and a differently designed caliper. What would the braking performance between the 03-04 with or without the brembo package as opposed to the 05-06. If i can live without the brembos i wouldn't mind having the other brakes in the 03-04, but i do drive quite spiritedly as well i do plan to have some track/autox days. Will also have larger/heavier wheels. What are your opinions? |
Not to be a dick..but really this question is much suited for a G35 forum. |

03-04 did receive the 4 pistons front/2 piston rear brembo brake package. 05-06 went back to the dual piston/single piston regular brake package. the biggest issue i found with owning a brembo brake car, is the cost of the pads and rotor replacement. Trying to find a set of rotors locally other than the dealer is generally a pain in the ass and if you do find them, they arent cheap. Also, the brembo brakes dont seem to last very long, but personally i dont really care. if the car needs a set of pads thrown in, ill throw it up on the hoist and deal with it. finding aftermarket wheels with brembo equipped cars is also a pain in the ass. the offset is a bit wonky bc nissan had brembo use a larger than normal brembo caliper. why, no one really knows. If you buy a off the shelf brembo, AP racing, stop tech, or SSBC brake kit, the width of their 4 pot calipers are actually smaller than what the nissan/brembo calipers are. if you are looking for an aggressive fitting wheel, you may want to look for a 03-04 with the base brake package, seeings as how you can go as low as a +10 rear/ +17 front which, if you are going with a lipped wheel, looks absolutely amazing. with a brembo car, that drops to a +28 rear/+29 front. good luck with your search. i got your PM and will get back to you soon. :) |
^ Thanks dipper! but base for base are the 03-04 on equal terms with the 05-06? when my buddy was driving his 06 g35, he has some big wheels 20x9 in the front 20x10.5 in the rear and his brakes seem semi inadequate in terms of stopping quickly. i am a little confused though, why is it that i have to go with a higher offset wheel with the brembo brakes? shouldn't they have a lower offset to make room for the large calipers. let's say for instance the wheels have no lip. |

i believe it costs about $1400 for the front brake service at the dealer (rotors and pads). |

i was able to turn down my oem rotors and installed hawk pads and i was good to go. |

i want a huge lip on mine :D was thinking Volk GT-C's |
im my particular case, im running work VSXX. the first set i was sent out were a +17 front and +10 rear and they didnt clear my brakes. Now it gets goofy with 3pc wheel bc apparently you can pick different face discs and lip discs and what not and im not entirely sure of the actual math behind it. i ended up having to get the +28 and +29 offset version of the same wheels to clear the factory brembo. had i sucked it up and gone to an aftermarket big brake kit, the more aggressive fitting wheels would have fit just fine. the issue lies in nissans varient of the brembo caliper. this has been gone over in some depth on g35driver. btw: 3.5" lip in the back, 2.5" in the front with a 19x10.5 and 19x 9.5 up front and 275/35/r19 meats in the back and i always get looks. :D edit: shitty pic before the coilovers and alignment http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y26...h/G35work1.jpg ill have better pics this weekend if the weather holds and i can detail the car and do a proper photoshoot. |

i thought the face of the mounting hub was more important than the actual offset. just cause of how large some brembo brakes are. i guess to get the look you really want. you'd have to go with higher offset wheels and spacers with extended lugs. i think all in all, unless yours is up for sale i'll probably just get the normal one without the brembos. |

That said, braking performance is largely dictated by tire type. It's the feel and fade that the rotors and calipers dictate. |
^ which is something i'd want to run i think i'll probably run 19 front 20 rear. or just 19 all around. for sure heavier/larger wheels/tires will affect braking distance, i just wanted to see how adequate the stock brakes are so i don't have to upgrade. there is a very mint one with brembos that i'm going to look at. we'll see i really want the brembos. so i can be cool. how sad. |

did the coupes share the same brake issue as the 4drs in the '03s that came out. i remember changing the pads every 10,000km. |

funny you say that, I'm actually runnin my spare 19's up front currently while my fronts are getting fixed. So here's a breakdown of how 20 in the rear and 19 up front looks. My personal opinion and a lot of G owners agree, is that 20's are the perfect size for coupes, because the rear fenders on the coupe are so bulky they swallow up wheels with weak offsets making them look an inch or 2 smaller. I've had my 20's mistaken for 19's and even 18's at times (mind you this was before I went crazy with super low offsets) The thing is, if you want 19's to look good on a coupe you have to slam the shit out of it, with 20's you can lower it a little over an inch and you got yourself a car that looks like it's got a perfect drop and that you can daily drive without worrying about every pothole. this is a 1.5 inch drop all around, I dunno bout you, but to me the 19's up front definitely look small to me. http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...e/100_4783.jpg You can have awful offsets up front (if thats your thing) while still clearing stock brakes, doubt it would clear brembos though. http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...e/100_4785.jpg And this is the best part about the coupe, you can go crazy with offsets with a large lip size (my rear lip is about 4 inches) while clearing any BBK... this is a +5 offset in the rear, the spokes have a LOT of clearance (the branch Im holding in my hand is how much space there is between the spoke and calipers) http://i190.photobucket.com/albums/z...e/100_4786.jpg |
not to say you can't pull off 19's on a G coupe, Dipper is doing it! but off course they're $5000 Work's! you can't fail with those, lol.... damn Dip it looks better than I thought they'd be. You ended up getting the right size after all eh, wise decision man, wheels look hot. |
oooooooh adon are you selling your R1 Hypes?! but yea 19's do look small on the coupes, especially with the huge fenders. ugh i dont want to buy 20's but my co worker with 20's and a 1.2" drop looks REALLY good. but that's okay i wont be able to afford wheels until next year, so until then i'll run my stockies. |
