Fox = douchiest channel available?

So first they provide Red Eye with a place to spew their garbage, and now they're making a show about people getting fired from their jobs. This Mike Darnell sounds like a sack of shit.

Fox to make reality TV show out of company layoffs

By DAVID BAUDER
AP Television Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- The Fox network is letting employees of some troubled small businesses decide which one of their colleagues will be laid off and turning the results into a reality show.

The series, "Someone's Gotta Go," is in production, but Fox wouldn't say on Wednesday when it would go on the air.

Each episode will feature a company with about 15 or 20 employees that needs to cut costs because of the economy. Instead of the boss deciding who is fired, the company will open its books to show everyone's salaries and let the employees make the call.

In an inverse to "The Apprentice," the chosen one loses, instead of gets, a job.

Fox says the laid-off worker will get a small severance, but isn't saying whether the network or producers are paying the participants in anything beyond the chance for prime-time fame. Fox is developing the show with Endemol USA, the company behind "Big Brother," "Deal or No Deal" and "Fear Factor."

Tory Johnson, founder and chief executive of Women For Hire, which organizes job fairs and advises women seeking work, said she wonders whether "Someone's Gotta Go" is a good idea at a time so many people are out of work.

"For most people who are concerned about job security or are desperate to get hired, I don't think there's much to laugh at in terms of watching someone else's pain and misery," said Johnson, a regular contributor to ABC's "Good Morning America."

But Mike Darnell, chief of alternative programming at Fox, said everyone who participates in the show knows fully what they are doing.

"I feel that it's part of the times that we are living in," Darnell said. "It's certainly no worse than watching the news every night and hearing all the statistics and watching what is happening. To be frank, like all these shows, if you don't want to watch, don't watch it."

Fox and Endemol have had "absolutely no trouble" finding companies willing to participate, he said.

Fox wouldn't reveal the show's host, which it says is a business consultant who will offer advice to participating companies.

Darnell, a fan of "The Office," said he'd been working with Endemol about a workplace show, perhaps involving an expert coming in to help a dysfunctional workplace, when he saw a news report about a company where the boss couldn't decide who to lay off and left the job to his employees.

That became the basis for "Someone's Gotta Go."

He envisions it as a story about employee empowerment. Many people in the workplace can relate to seeing a colleague laid off and wondered why someone else they perceived as less valuable kept their job, he said.

Darnell said he wasn't concerned about the emotional fallout in a workplace after "Someone's Gotta Go," where an employee might be left to work with a colleague they'd just said on national television should be fired.

"Sounds like good reality television," he said. "You just described a good concept for a reality TV show."
short version: Fox is making a show in which companies with 15-20 employees who need to cut back open their financial books showing everyones salaries to the employees and let them decide who gets fired.

This just confirmed that I will never watch Fox again.

KingDeeCee 04-12-2009 12:09 PM

I don't even think I have Fox anymore. Shaw changed their channel 28 again.

twitchyzero 04-12-2009 12:12 PM

we get it, RS hates Fox.

CivicBlues 04-12-2009 12:14 PM

Wow, how stupid can you be?

Red Eye is broadcast on FoxNews Channel. That's like saying you won't watch HBO shows because of something you saw on CNN (both owned by Time Warner)

I'm guessing you don't actually know that any of these shows are broadcast by FOX since they are simulcast on CTV or Global:
24
Bones
Dollhouse
Fringe
House
Lie to Me
Prison Break
Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

not to mention
The Simpsons (yes, I know they suck now)
Family Guy (yes, I know they suck now)
American Dad (actually pretty good)

Just don't watch any of the Reality Show crap they put out because of demand from VIEWERS LIKE YOU.

CorneringArtist 04-12-2009 12:14 PM

Fox already fucked up on the Dragonball remake, so why not take it a step further and make a Survivor: Office Edition? Their original shows are really solid, but all their reality shows (especially Hole in the Wall, that I first saw on YouTube, is REALLY gimmicky with the American influence) get the axe after 3 episodes anyways...

Actually, I did know that, and I don't watch any of those shows as, like you said, Simpsons and Family Guy aren't that funny anymore, and the rest I don't think are particularly interesting.

I don't watch HBO either, or CNN as it's, well CNN. Fox broadcasts junk, and thusly I don't watch their channel, plain and simple. The fact that they are putting out even crappier shows just supports my lack of watching their channel.

CivicBlues 04-12-2009 12:29 PM

Okay then, in order to provide you a better analogy, what TV shows DO you watch and enjoy?

underscore 04-12-2009 12:49 PM

Channel wise I watch mostly CBS (How I Met Your Mother, Big Bang Theory, Amazing Race), Discovery (misc) and OLN (misc), CBC and occasionally TSN for sports.

I find it funny how the thread turned to beaking me for disliking Fox and their shitty shows.

CivicBlues 04-12-2009 01:15 PM

CBS - broadcasts crap like Big Brother and Survivor, which started this stupid reality trend in the first place.

Discovery - started out as a viable compeditor to TLC, now nothing more than a vehicle for 2nd rate reality shows.

CBC - huge waste of taxpayer's money

So you see, it's kind of idiotic to judge an entire network based on broad generalizations.

El Bastardo 04-12-2009 01:19 PM

I know Civic Blues and I don't often see eye to eye, but hes absolutely right.

pandalove 04-12-2009 02:18 PM

i'd watch that show

BoneThug 04-12-2009 02:41 PM

fox's whole business plan is to put stuff on the air that pisses off the marginalized and appeals to the lowest common denominators. its why they are rich as fuck

Thats all relative..

Faux should be shut down, they do nothing but create propaganda that puts down the true USA. CBC is true Canadian TV and should live on as long as Canada stands or we would be swamped with crap American TV.

Personally i love discovery channel, alot of good quality TV shows that try to broaden your perspectives and views of life. Faux does the complete opposite, They narrow your perspectives and views of anything that is the complete truth with there un-credible journalism.

Well I guess thats the kind of attitude you guys get from living in the Scrotum, BC. Us urbanites are sophisticated enough to differentiate from good entertainment (non-reality shows) and a network's apparent ideology.

Good think i live in downtown vancouver.

AzNightmare 04-13-2009 09:50 PM

lol, It's more like most reality shows suck.
Don't hate the race! hate the individual!

Lomac 04-13-2009 10:26 PM

While Fox -- as a network -- puts on some very questionable reality shows (ie: Who's Your Daddy, Hole in the Wall, Mr Personality, etc), it also airs some decent action and drama shows (24, House, American Dad, etc). Fox News, however, is nothing more than a very narrow minded, right-wing news show that's heavy on the propaganda and short on any worthwhile content.

Don't hate a station simply because they have some bad shows. Just because there's a few bad apples, it doesn't mean the whole field is bad.

underscore 04-13-2009 10:38 PM

they choose to air, and therefore support, so many of those shows though, and that is why I don't watch that channel.

Okay good for you...now go away now.

Just tell me how you're any better than Fox news by making blanket statements and broad generalizations?

Just FYI, Fox has broadcast some of the most liberal shows ever to hit the airways:
The Simpsons (in it's heyday)
Arrested Development (for this very fact the station should be applauded - still one of the smartest live comedies to ever hit the air)
The X-Files,
etc, etc, etc.

Ideologues from BOTH sides piss me off.

P.S. did anyone see 24 last night? Tony WTF??

StaxBundlez 04-14-2009 10:36 AM

but
but
FOX is the most insightful unbiased network in the world

look, we both see this from completely opposite angles. you think that because they've had some good shows, they can broadcast some garbage. I think that because of the garbage, I won't watch their channel, regardless of some of the better shows they used to have

hongy 04-15-2009 10:36 PM

The real question is why should anyone care? It's a fucking reality show, who the fuck watches those.

Meowjin 04-15-2009 11:16 PM

discovery is sweet. Fight quest is an awesome show.,
