The small cars are still a safe option with an attentive driver behind the wheel. The lower mass, generally, means better maneuvering. With some active safety, like stability control and traction control, a lot of situations can be avoidable. It doesn't work if you're a C-Lai though... all the safety devices won't save you if you let go of the wheel and cover your eyes in impending crashes.

it looks smart is doin better than other smallers cars ..

Ludepower 04-14-2009 07:30 PM

The Smart looked liked it did the best out off all of them...haha

RRxtar 04-14-2009 08:27 PM

keep in mind the angle of those pictures too. being an offset (left corner to left corner) crash, you see the impact side of the small car, and the oposite side of the large car so it LOOKS much worse than it is. its not like the nose of the camry is actually touching the seat of the yaris.

and the smart looks like it held up alright because it has virtually NO crumple zone, so of course it had to hold up well. i would venture a guess the impact forces the smart car dummy received were significantly higher than the other 2 cars.

but ya, id rather be in a larger car than a smaller car in a head on, for sure.

this is the vid to the article... it should show up by itself, it did on my browser

and this is the most real test cuz it's actually get both car in motion (more real) then stationary... much better indication then running into a brick wall :P

threezero 04-15-2009 11:17 PM

how bout jeep wranglers. i dunt know they look like it a rolling death trap in a crash.

i know the smart has great crash test ratings, but you just cant beat physics.

big thing hits small thing, which one is gonna get more owned?

Lol love how crushed that yaris looks,

but actually i don't see why people obsess over crash tests, how about having all of your wheels securely on the car, how about visibility, how about road feel, comfort, not having your engine catch on fire, etc. all these things added up are much more important to me than a crash test

ilvtofu 04-18-2009 08:43 AM

lol also love how the plastic panels in the smart are just flying in the air, could be dangerous for the C class driver to have that much crap flying at him,
would like to see a yaris vs. Smart crash test, yaris only weights like 300 pounds more than a smart, but the smart frame seems much stronger, although the crumple zone is much smaller,

I would imagine that with the strength of the smart frame the only other thing you would need to protect the occupants is a full body fat suit
