bite inhibition
 

what is the best and safest way to teach bite inhibition. my dog has never been good with fast moving thing like rollerblader, skateboarder and cyclist. through training we have pretty much got him to ignore them. He no longer actively chase after it. However he is still scare of them cause few days ago he was walking off leash and a bike sneak up behind him and unfortunately broke the 2 yr of no biting record we work so hard to keep :(

I want to train him to not react with a bite in these cicrumstance. I can tell he is scare of bikes and such ever since he bite a little girl on a bike when he was a puppy. Now he will give way to bikes and stay at least 5m away if he can see them coming, is it those biker that bike really fast and sneak up behind him that makes my dog have aggressive reaction.

He was a red zone case before and has come a long way. how do i replicate this bike sneaking up on it scenario without putting the biker that will be helping me in danger? Muzzle is not a good idea as he already got the idea he will be blank out to everything with the muzzle on.

Introduce him to bikes slowly. If you have a bike let it sit on the lawn and play around the bike. If the dog is timid about a non moving bike just do regular behaviors around the bike until the dog becomes comfortable around it. Walk beside him pushing the bike not riding it or have a friend walk beside you pushing the bike. After the dog gets used to that have a friend ride beside you or even You ride beside him with a bike after awhile. The only way to get around a hurdle like that is to show that there is no reason for the aggressive behavior. Take your time and just have patience.

i try the pushing bike with 1 hand and dog on leash on the other and it didn't work out back than witha the choke chain as he can outlast me or he will choke himself to the point of passing out to try and get at the bike. i have since switch to shock collar and actually that is a much more humane way to go about training especially with red zone dogs like mine. I will try the pushing bike along side him exercise again when I'm back in van and fix the tire (he destroy all 4 bikes we own)

he is fine with the bike if its stationary, just when it move it scares him.

What breed of dog. I know with some breeds the pull to hunt things that move away fast is strong. You'll need two people to do any work. one person on the other side (not on the bike) walks by you and the dog, with the dog facing it as it goes past. Good reactions get rewards, if he starts to react negatively turn around and walk away. Then when he can watch a bike go by slowly start having the person jog with the bike between them and the dog. (never have the person on the bike as this puts their legs in a dangerous position. Same as before positive reaction gets reward and negative you turn and walk away. A positive reaction will probably never be a wagging tail dog, but as long as the dog ignores or looks to you for direction then you are ok. Also with a dog like this, other then fenced in dog parks I would not have them off a leash. Best bet is to get a long 30ft training leash so at least you still have that support if a bike should go by.

he's a german shepherd. I wanted to believe its prey drive cause that would seem easier to redirect but I believe he is biting out of fear. He came out of litter that all the male dogs when to the toronto police depeartment except him. Now I know why.

The thing with fence in dog park is he won't be getting enough exercise. he would run around for a bit than come back and stick to me. He will fetch but not consistantly enough to get the exercise he need.

the only time he gets enough exercise is when we walk on off leash on the dikes but that is where the bike incident happen and now my dad is force to only take him on the dike at night after 10pm. Not a good idea as summer comes after a walk on the dike at night a human would come back with a gazillion mosquitoe bites.

anyways I have done those pushing bike by him exercise when he is young and got him to avoid it but i guess not enough. will do more once I'm back in van.

Stick the dog on a 30ft training leash or a flexi then. This way he feels "free" but you still have some control if a bike should appear.

The trick is to get a friend to move the bike by the both of you. This way it resembles someone riding by on a bike when you are walking the dog. Bribe a friend with a coffee of their choice or something to help you out for 45 mins. Do this once or twice a week and the reaction will get smaller.
