duplicolor wheel painting
 

for anyone that diy painting wheels using duplicolor wheel spray paint. do you add on the clear coat or just finish it without the clear and leave it only with the paint?

ive done my wheels before
if the wheels have no curb rash all u have to do is clean scuff spray

the clear isnt nessary but if u want a glossier coat then add or 3 coats of clear

I am pretty sure that stuff is acrylic enamel or something. It should with stand normal day to day driving. Like silvercivicdx, if you want a glossier coat throw on some clear too.

I've used it before to do some time attack steelies (I was bored). and they help up to winter weather quite nicely.

Make sure the prep is really good before you throw on the first coat. That'll be more important.

That ones the clear. Anyways, it'll be fine with or without the clear, it wouldn't hurt for the extra protection.

Just remember prep is key.

its up to you,

adding the clear coat might make the paint really heavy which might peel in the future.

without the clear coat, the paint is on a light coat, so it might not peel, but you won't have the extra protection

i recommend adding 1 or 2 light clear coats - like a quick spray over

tell u the truth my buddy painted his rims all he did was wash, dry and spray

and it never peeled or chipped

It will probably say on the back of the can
but basically you should sand/scuff the wheels with somthing like a 320 grit (whatever the can recommends)

then clean the surface well.. wipe it down with some thinner or alcohol or somthing

i guess you could also wipe it with a tack cloth

I know a guy that painted his 18" CPO35 Gunmetal using this and they turned out unbelievably awesome, i couldn't believe it.

Sorry for jacking your thread, but I'm wondering if the paint will chip or knick here and there after a while? During winter usage?

mine never chipped after the horrendous winter we just had. I did 4 layers for each wheel, no primer and no clearcoat.

duplicolor is a great brand for painting wheels just make sure the surface is spot on clean or else it wont last that long til you have to paint youre wheels again
rushing through a paint job aint soo much of a good idea, just take your time and in the end its worth it

what about repairing curb damage any ideas for how to do that?

^if you go to canadian tire they sell bondo quick putty or something like that
its very good you just apply it where the curbage is then sand it down, then primer, and then paint/clear

yup, my paint peeled right off during the winter. it also came off where the spokes meet the lip, and the lip was mostly peeled too. maybe because i didn't remove the old paint or sand blast it.

Depending on how much of the original paint you want off, just go over it with some 220, then 400. (light-refinishing)
If you want ALL the paint off, get some aircraft stripper and go nuts on it. keep shaking the can or it will leave chunks of paint that wont come off.

Use blocks for flat surfaces otherwise you'll see dips after you paint it.
220 or lower dry sand, clean it off and do it again with 400. Wet with 400 if you want, but it doesn't really matter if you did a good job.
Use primer if you're going with a dark colour. Don't use it if you're using the duplicolour Anodized stuff.

Spray even coats in ONE DIRECTION. Side to side or top to bottom. Start your spray past your wheel, and drag across and end away from the wheel. Move down while spraying and drag it across again on the unpainted part under where you sprayed. Kinda like a Zig Zag pattern.

DO IT LIGHTLY. You can go over it again for more colour, and to fill in any missed parts. You don't want to overlap your lines. Keep the spray parallel, as you want an even coat. Otherwise, it will end up heavy in the middle and light on the ends.

Let it dry a bit until its not "wet" but glossy. Repeat the paint process until its evenly coated and to the colour depth you want. Lighter coats from farther away will give it a light colour, a little closer and more coats will make it darker obviously.

When its COMPLETELY DRY. Wetsand with 1500 or 2000 to make it even. Clean it.
Repeat the same steps for clearcoat. Clearcoat will give it that shine you're looking for, and it gives it some protection. LIGHT COATS. You can do as many light coats as you want. You only do 1 or 2 when you do it heavy which is not recommended.

You should let it cure inbetween paint and Clear, but you can also just do it when its dried for about an hour. Doing your clear while it's still glossy will give you uneven patches as it wont dry in uniform.

After every 2 or 3 light coats, let it dry otherwise it won't cure properly and it will run, peel, or crack.
Multiple light coats VS a few heavy will not only look better, but last much longer.
Let that bitch cure overnight. Putting your wheels back on after it just dries will create runs or cracks in the paint. Let it sit face up overnight.
Use those 500watt work lamps to use, and point it facing down on the wheel about 3 feet away for at least an hour.
If you only have one of those lamps, use foil to make it evenly spread over your wheels. Kinda like a cone shape enclosing over your wheels. You want the lamp to shine on all of them so that they cure evenly.
You can skip the lamp part if you're leaving it alone for more than 12 hours. The lamp will cut time to about half.

Do it right the first time, and you wont have to do it all over again when you fuck it up.
