I usually look for the walk/don't walk sign. I know in a lot of cases now, it doesn't mean anything because nowadays, a lot of them don't say walk until someone pushes a button, but it's a rough gauge that I use to see if the light will change soon or not.

Unfortunately that sort of thing isn't on the driver's test. Little tidbits like that are yet another argument in favor of mandatory driver training.
