The Director-General of WHO, Margaret Chan, can lick my ass.

I can't believe that after mishandling the avian flu incidents time after time that led to 299 deaths in HK (when she was the Director of Health in Hong Kong), she's given the opportunity to fuck up more on a greater scale.

Vancouver Island BBB warns of swine flu scams

The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be on the lookout for fraudulent e-mails and websites trying to take advatage of the swine flu outbreak.

“Scammers read newspapers, watch TV and surf the Internet and they know that by using a hook from the day’s top headlines, that they’ll be able to catch lots of fish,” said Rosalind Scott of the Vancovuer Island Better Business Bureau. “Right now, issues associated with swine flu and a potential pandemic are of global interest and that means scammers have a very large pond to go phishing in.”

According to McAfee Avert Labs, an online security company, spammers began pumping out e-mails as soon as the first accounts of swine flu were being reported in the news, accounting for two per cent of all spam messages. The messages include such subject lines as, “Madonna caught swine flu” and “Swine flu in Hollywood” The company reports that the e-mails often link to online pharmacies.

According to online security company F-Secure Corp., more than 250 websites with the term swine flu have been registered within the first few days following the announcement of the outbreak and predict that the scams artists are preparing to use the sites in a variety of different online scams. F-Secure also reports that one site is already selling a Swine Flu Survival Guide PDF for $19.95.

BBB offers the following advice to avoid swine flu scams:

• Avoid opening e-mail from an unknown source and do not click on any links in the body of the e-mail or open any attachments. Instead, delete the e-mail or report it to the Federal Trade Commission by forwarding the e-mail to spam@uce.gov.

• Don't believe online offers for vaccinations against swine flu because a vaccine does not exist. For more information on swine flu and updates on progress in fighting the outbreak, go to www.nml-lnm.gc.ca/index-eng.htm

• Make sure your anti-virus and anti-spyware software is up to date and all operating system security patches have been installed.

Yeah, everyone in the service industry is supposed to wear a mask. Not a fan of the pulmonias(the open air cabs)? Most tourists love the novelty and want to ride those everywhere.
If you see an e36 M3 Cabrio driving by give me a wave... I wont be wearing a mask.

your run in the mill surgical mask won't do anything unless someone coughs into your mouth and somehow misses your eyes. there's no point in using them.

just stop touching your faces unless you've washed your hand with 70% iso or etho alcohol.

ya.. can't canada send a message to all canadians in mexico to quickly get tested and return to homeland (canada)? And only canadians are allowed to fly into canada from mexico, this will reduce those infected non-canadians trying to escape the spread of the flu.

Instead of closing the borders completely, why can't they just put anyone coming back from mexico into quarantine until they are confirmed to be flu free?

Found out today that a co-worker's sister contracted this virus. She was in Mexico a couple weeks ago with her family, yet the sister was the only one out of 'em all to contract it. The only thing she had done differently than the others was that she visited one of the farmers markets. Asides from typical flu symptoms, though, she's fine. Health Canada (or whatever the department is) is going to her house and doing a thorough disinfect of her house.

U.S. official caught flu on Obama's Mexico trip

let the conspiracies start.

someone let the virius go in mexico city trying to kill him?..

Or maybe the US let it go?...

seeing it's a combination of a few different viruses, being man made isn't out of the question.
WASHINGTON — A U.S. Department of Energy employee who was part of President Barack Obama's delegation for his recent trip to Mexico came down with flu-like symptoms, and subsequently infected three family members with probable cases of swine flu, the White House said Thursday.

Robert Gibbs, the White House spokesman, said the man never flew on Air Force One and has since recovered and returned to work.

But revelations of the case struck close to home for a president and an administration that has urged vigilance among Americans to protect themselves from potential exposure to the H1N1 virus.

The U.S. administration official in question was a member of the lead security detail for U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu during Obama's visit to Mexico City on April 16 and 17.

According to Gibbs, the man arrived in Mexico on April 13 and began to feel ill on April 16. He developed a fever the next day and then returned to the U.S. aboard a commercial airline April 18. He attended a working dinner in Mexico that Obama attended but never "came within six feet" of the president, Gibbs said.

Neither Obama nor Chu experienced any symptoms.

Gibbs said it was "highly, highly, highly unlikely" that any other members of the administration or travelling press corps would be infected with the virus because so much time has elapsed since the Mexico trip.

After the Energy Department employee arrived back in the U.S., he is believed to have infected his wife, young son and a nephew. The mother and son tested "probable" for swine flu on April 28, but "all four individuals experienced only mild symptoms, and all four have recovered," said Gibbs.

Even as the White House offered reassurances about the president's health, aides were conducting damage control over remarks made early Thursday by Vice-President Joe Biden.

During an appearance on the Today Show, Biden said he had told his own family to avoid airplanes and subways because of the swine flu — contradicting U.S. health officials' recommendations and Obama's own statement that there was no reason for Americans to panic.

"I would tell members of my family — and I have — that I wouldn't go anywhere in confined places now," Biden said, when asked what he would tell his family about travel to Mexico, where the flu virus originated.

"It's not just going to Mexico, it's (if) you're in a confined aircraft — when one person sneezes it goes all the way through the aircraft. That's me. I would not be, at this point, if they had another way of transportation, suggesting they ride the subway."

The Centers for Disease Control has recommended against non-essential travel to Mexico, but has not discouraged other travel or use of public transit in the U.S.

The White House offered a clarification after travel industry officials condemned the remark.

"The advice he is giving family members is the same advice the administration is giving to all Americans: that they should avoid unnecessary air travel to and from Mexico," said Elizabeth Alexander, Biden's spokeswoman. "If they are sick, they should avoid airplanes and other confined public spaces, such as subways."

BC School Closes because of H1N1 Flu
Vancouver/CKNW(AM980)

4/30/2009

Provincial Health Officer Dr. Perry Kendall is urging parents not to panic, but to take basic common sense precautions to control the spread of the H1-N1 virus.

Kendall says parents should consider the H1-N1 virus an extension of the regular flu, and keep kids home of they show symptoms...He's stressing hand washing and the usual basic hygiene measures. And despite the headlines Kendall says everyone needs to calm down.

But a Vernon school has shut down for a week after a student was diagnosed with the virus--the child has a mild case and is recovering at home.
It'll be interesting to see how many other schools close down in the next week or two

Because many of the Canadians are trying to get out the costs of flights are starting to skyrocket... a week ago I could have caught a direct oneway flight from here to Vancouver for $89 plus tax... now the same flight is $700+ plus taxes.
I still personally think that it is overkill to flee the country when it is in Canada as well... but I respect people opinions and reactions.

do you think this flu could be a test? spread a flu thats not all too bad (only kills a coulple 100 people and gets people sick like we see) and you that to see how this would travel around the world by planting in the country with one of the worlds largest tourist popluations.

Who ever can then use that as a way to plan for a actual deadly outbreak and the best plans of attack so something doesn't happen like in the movie 12 monkeys.

Just something I thought of just now.

Its time for the collectors to start gathering the tainted. A quarantine with the doomed will be established.
Watch out for the collectors.

They also plan on setting loose German Shepard K9 units.

The prophecies are becoming true.
