the swine flu is treatable using tamiflu (same stuff they used during avian flu times). It's been flying off the shelves along with n95 masks. If you're going to mexico, make sure you are able to pickup some tamiflu and n95 masks and you should be set... plus hand sanitizer...

you may have trouble acquiring the tamiflu and n95 masks however... so if you're going to start looking, contact your physician for a prescription, and your local pharmacies to make sure they have stock or to ask them to order in for you.

Also, guys, please follow the direction on the prescriotion- tamiflu!
Follow the dosage and keep on taking it even though you think you're cure. We don't want the virus to evole and become immune to the vacine!

Yup, they said that on CBC news yesterday...they said truly prevention is key just like any flu season, wash your hands often and if you have symptoms, stay in your house in HOME ISOLATION! They also said if you are going to see your doctor, you're suppose to let them know you MAY have the swine so they can keep other patients away to prevent spread.

On a side note, we were walking in Steveston/Gary Point park in Richmond, and 2 c-lai's already had full on SARS masks on!

Jews, Muslims band together:

JERUSALEM (AP) — The outbreak of swine flu should be renamed "Mexican" influenza in deference to Muslim and Jewish sensitivities over pork, said an Israeli health official Monday.
Deputy Health Minister Yakov Litzman said the reference to pigs is offensive to both religions and "we should call this Mexican flu and not swine flu," he told a news conference at a hospital in central Israel.

there's mix reviews of whether Tamilflu does work on swine flu or not. some sites and newspapers mention tamiflu as able to combat the virus. I need clarification on this.

nothing, although i have never seen such a long line up at customs. There were airport officials staring at everyone in line. So i think they were looking for people that were ill.

Like everything, I'm sure the media is blowing things out of proportion. If it was a serious threat, the borders would be closed, and all travelers would be quarantined.

The government has issued a travel warning. Is that serious enough for you?

Here's my insight, I've been following this rather heavily as I've been travelling for the past month, and currently have a flu type cold. Anyhow....the World Health Organization, http://www.who.int/en/, went from Phase 3 to Phase 4 early today, which means sustained human to human transmition. I think that sucks, because the virus is airborne now. I'm in London, and there is talks of "mass breeding grounds" on the underground due to the high volume of people who use it per day; I believe it's in the millions.

As for the quarantine issue, the Director-General of the World Health Organization stated "Given the widespread presence of the virus, the Director-General considered that containment of the outbreak is not feasible. The current focus should be on mitigation measures." (Source-->http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/.../en/index.html)
So, quarantine is not really an option as it's so wide spread.

WHO is conducting a review of the current data on the 29th, and it should be available on the WHO website; http://www.who.int. (Source http://www.who.int/csr/disease/swine.../en/index.html)

Current numbers according to WHO are as follows; As of 27 April 2009, the United States Government has reported 40 laboratory confirmed human cases of swine influenza A(H1N1), with no deaths. Mexico has reported 26 confirmed human cases of infection with the same virus, including seven deaths. Canada has reported six cases, with no deaths, while Spain has reported one case, with no deaths.

Anyhow, theres my share of the information, as I'm checking WHO and http://www.cdc.gov/ at least twice a day to keep current.

EDIT-->I'm noticing different numbers on the death toll coming from different sources. Most news-papers over here (London) differ from North American based sources, and WHO and CDC also have different numbers, so I really don't know.

The mortality rate is supposed to be < 10%, I wonder why so many Mexicans are dieing.

If you're a healthy young person, you're probably fine. If you're unhealthy, have medical problems, or are older... well you're fucked.

I know people whine about the Canadian healthcare system, but compared to the Mexican one, we are in heaven
