Where to buy a gas mask?

Im going to HK soon and thought i should prepare myself with the swine flu thing going on. Since the real danger is in the confinement of a tiny space of an airliner, i was gonna stock up on those wimpy blue masks. But why stop there...i want a full-fledge gas-mask that i can wear for about 14+ hrs. anyone know where i can found one (anything $100-$200+)? (sometimes i have too much time on my hands...LOL)

I'll feed u guys pics of the flight if i find one...LOL

Cheers

twitchyzero 05-01-2009 05:17 PM

lol oh wow.

dave's surplus? lol

Hondaracer 05-01-2009 05:17 PM

just buy a painters respirator, good ones are around 80-120 and the filters in those are good for micro bacteria i belive..

gotta laugh at all the people in china/mexico who cram 300 people into a 50 person train and think those paper masks do shit..

go to a medical supply store, and buy an NOISH approved N95 type mask. N95 types are rated to protect agaisnt viruses such as swine, sars, etc.

Shun Izaki 05-02-2009 01:35 PM

it'd be even better if he gets nailed to the floor cuz people think hes some sorta terrorist.

lol

it's mainly just the vapour for people's breath n stuff... if you open your air circulator on the plane when you get on, you'll be fine

Don't forget your HazMat suit.

Hope you can eat and drink with your mask on. :D

Seriously, you should just stay home if you think the situation is that bad. The N95 mask is adequate but unless your hygiene is impeccable it really doesn't matter.

dont gas masks need their filters changed like every 3hrs or something?

Depends on the type of filter.

asian_XL 05-03-2009 08:59 AM

pass the arrival gate...take a taxi...go to mongkok...I hope I see you walking around like
that, I'll have my camera ready, it will be on youtube.

To answer your original question, Ebay would be your best bet if you still have the time to wait for shipping. In all honesty, though, a gas mask or N95 mask would be overkill. More people have died this year from the seasonal flu than swine flu but hey, that kind of information is not sensational therefore not news worthy. It is one thing to be informed; it is another thing to feed the paranoia. Just so you know, a good hand washing technique is probably the best way to protect yourself in public.

If hospitals are using N95 particulate masks when dealing DIRECTLY with patients suspected or confirmed with swine flu, I think it will be good enough for you.
However, unless you get test-fitted, the mask will not be effective. Here's a link to a regional retailer if you need to order a box of them anyways:

http://www.survivetheflu.com/masks.html
or
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/for/1157187659.html

If you're concerned about the regions you'll be visiting, check this link out: http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msa=0...a37b713f6b5950

Hope that helps.
