In honor of your post thumper, I shall now call Monster Miatas "Brokeback Miatas".

They're manly, but ultimately gay.

(Miatas are awesome regardless).

So you want to buy a car for under $5K. What is your budget going to be to modify the car?

What do you intend to do with the car? AutoX? Track? Drag? trailer queen? rust away in your drive way?

Answer these questions before you can decide on what type of car you may want.

AE86's may seen fun, but finding a rust free car is going to be tough.
Miata's are light and aftermarket support is plentiful.
What about a CRX or EF Civic? JDM Civic with a B16?

You prefer a LHD, yet you have an EG6?

Lol - how about near impossible, unless you import from Cali or AZ perhaps. I agree it is a super fun option, the most fun car I've ever owned without a doubt. But it did take me 8 months to find a bone stock coupe without a sun roof. And even then I have rust on the rockers to deal with.

death_blossom 05-04-2009 10:27 PM

those cars you are thinking of aren't really "fast". for 5k or less, I would suggest a gen1 Talon TSi.

LenovoTurbo 05-04-2009 10:35 PM

An Integra.

1exotic 05-04-2009 10:46 PM

Eclipse GSX if you can find one for 5000 maybe?
has turbo and 210hp to come with it...

civics are getting old, really old.... but still good cheap cars..

hm... probably jsut street use, maybe track it once in a blue moon lol. well 5gs depending on what it is obviously im not goin to spend 5gs on a stock 86 or EG. but yea 5gs obviously does not include mods. and il probably not be swapping it or turboing it just some light weight go kart untill i can afford something more powerful.

^ Pick two

He has picked two; he asked for Fast/Light and cheap, never said anything about reliable.

I hate to hi-jack the thread.

but for those who know more about SW20's. I'm interested in looking around for one for a friend... project car, reliable/cheap

Mister Donut 05-05-2009 08:54 AM

Get a '73 to '78 Honda Civic for $600, take $4,400 and give it to Justin. Don't waste any money on paint, stereo or a fancy interior and I gah-ron-tee you'll have a fast car.

Insurance will be cheap.
It will have to be manual
It is already light weight, and you can make it even lighter if you strip it out.
I doubt you will find a RHD version so LHD it is.
The only problem may be it might not be that easy to find parts when you break them.

hk20000 05-05-2009 10:21 AM

^ are you sure that a EF Civic wouldn't be better than that 73-78 bs? Costs about the same too....

Yeah, but the SB is lighter. Haha, you'll probably die instantly in a car accident.....but it's lighter.

From my own experience, back in the day, the Mustang 5.0 was all 3. Not sure about now if they're still holding up 10 years later but all 3 can be had if you know where to look.

I buy proper suspension geometry over a lighter chassis any day of the week.

You can find orignal 5.0s for less then 3k, but usually not in the greatest shape. On the other hand, if you do your homework, and have the mechanical knowhow, you can pick up a 4 cyl Mustang for 100-500 bucks, and a complete 5.0 drivetrain for 1500ish. $2500 for mods is alot. I know of a vortech supercharger that is for sale right now for 1500 bucks, and then spend 500ish on fuel upgrades, then 1000 into the suspension, and it will actually handle. spend some on the braking as well, haha. There is alot of stuff that is different on the 4cyl stangs from the V8s, but it all swaps over and bolts right up.
