It looked like the dad was wearing some boots (maybe steel toed?). That kick to the head of a kid could cause some serious damage like head trauma, possible brain damage, etc. The human body is fragile.

If the dad enter the scene and immediately see his son getting pound, I would understand what's going through his head.
