Laminate flooring
 

Hi, I am looking to install laminate flooring to my basement. I want to know where is a good place and how thick I should buy. Some people have told me 8mm is fine but some places suggested thicker like 12mm.

8mm is pretty much garbage

if you HAVE to use laminate i would use 12mm
if you have a little more money, use engineering 12-14mm hardwood

Theres a few questions you gotta ask yourself. Is it a high traffic area? Is there a specific look you're trying to achieve? Is cost an issue? Are there going to be moisture issues in your basement? That'll help narrow down your choices.

Here are some tips to installing laminates and advice before you do it:

Most basements nowadays are built slab on grade which means most of time you can build over with a certain type of underlay. Now problems may occur if you basement is unlevel, some underlay may help you some what level it out, which makes it better but not gone. If its seriouisly wack to begin with then you need to pour self leveling concrete and then do your laying. If moisture is a issue you gotta get you foundation fixed and waterproof it from the outside. pm me for more info

If this is a high traffic area or somewhere where people are wearing shoes you may want to invest in something else. Laminate is very poor for noise.
