internet slow. malware?

my internet has been super slow for the past week. i called shaw and they said it's not them. so i downloaded malwarebytes and found some trojan horses. after that, the internet speed got better. but not entirely. what else can i do?

knock on your neighbors doors and ask them not to hog the bandwidth.

not the issue. serious answers please.

When you're referring to slow internet speed, do you mean transfer speeds or browser response times? For exmple, are file transfers going full speed?

For general system maintenance, you should run a disk cleanup to remove temporary files, and other things. If your temp folder is packed, that'll slow things down, overall.

the computer itself isn't slow. it's just browser loading. if i try to log into my hotmail account it takes awhile.

Do you notice a lot of disk activity when you're waiting for the site to come up? Have you tried a different browser? Is there any improvement in speed?

This is a serious answer though. If your using a wireless connection, other ppl can use your connection and it can slow things down.

not just for wireless.. but for shaw (cable) in general.. since it's shared with ppl around the area.

are you on wireless or wire?
I assume u have shaw high speed not lite?

if on wireless, try download a driver from nvidia.com and see if you can get up to 600kb/s+ or not. if you are not getting 600kb/s+, try put on wire on to see if you get the similar speed.

I have this issue and found out my dlink's antenna was causing the problem. I replaced the antenna and got it up to speed. Also, if you have a Aspire One (in my case), i also found out turning off the power saving on wireless speed up the download.

hope that helps.

thanks for the responses. i'll give all those suggestions a try. i don't think i'd go to my neighbour's place and tell them to stop using the internet though. hehe.

im on shaw highspeed. my computer itself is attached directly to the router which is attached to the modem. the other computer and ps3 are connected wirelessly.

it's weird cuz some sites load faster. while sites like facebook or hotmail take alot longer to load.

Try clearing your temporary internet files. If your cache size is large, there could be a lot of files clogging things up.

Do a speed test and post what you get:

if you have a 2nd computer (or ask a friend who have a laptop), test your line using both computers, if both are equally slow.. then it's your line.. if only one is slow.. then maybe it's your computer .. and go from there.

If you're not too familiar with how to perform some of the medium-level browser maintenance you can use this tool:

http://account.live.com/autocare.aspx

Options #2 and #4 will take care of what you need.
