997's are nice too! 996's only make a good noise with the sport exhaust system... =/

i love my 996 with the sport exhaust ;) sounds way too good ahaha
full leather is a must for 996 imo... sat in one with the crappy plastic.. its disgusting.. and the sport wheel too

Just a comment on the Exige. One of my friends in Vancouver bought a Elise two years ago. Its really annoying after the first two weeks. Everything about that car is focused on performance, so even rainy days were annoying as the rain drops seemed that much louder, not to mention exterior noise, the cramped space, the flimsiness of the doors - in short it feels like a toy.
Given the stop-and-go traffic in Vancouver rain, it definitely isn't a daily driver.

ilvtofu 06-15-2009 11:21 AM

^agreed, elise will never be a substitute for a 911 no matter how fast it is. well 993 and newer ones that is, cos they don't kill you as easily.

i just bumped into someone at work next door who drives a 996. he said to search online for "996 intermediate shaft failure"...and hang on to your wallets! this also applies to boxsters that share the same engine.

(and yes his engine blew up because of this :o at 36k kms while under warranty lucky stars for him)

JDMStyo 06-17-2009 10:19 AM

So you're selling your leased bodykitted S2k for $40k and trying to get a 9-year old Porsche...

[edit]3.6, not 3.7... my bad

kchan 06-17-2009 11:19 AM

^
if its 99 - 01 its the 3.4L
02+ will be the 3.6L :D

Sweet ride for sure! Just a piece of advice though, if you ever need to service your future Porsche, i highly recommend the guys at Weissach. Forget MCL, very poor customer service. I get better treatment @ a KIA dealership.

ilvtofu 06-17-2009 02:31 PM

But only newer boxster S have the 3.4
the 986 never had the 3.4 so It probably wasn't the same 3.4 used in the 996
because the boxster didn't get it till 07 and the 996 got rid of it in 02,

So I don't think that in the 5 years between they didn't change the engine so I don't think what thumper says about boxster and 996 sharing the same engine is true, although it might be the same problem.

GreenBeans 06-17-2009 03:44 PM

if you "believe" it's a 996 you shouldn't be buying a porsche

yeah i'm really not sure, that's why i asked if anyone else out there knew more...

the stories about the rear main seal dying seems to be overrated the more i read about it online... i guess it got hyped up because it happens to be a porsche, and it's so expensive to correct compared to all the other brands out there that also leak.

how can he "sell" his S2k if it is still in the lease term? i thought he bought out already?

ilvtofu 06-17-2009 10:05 PM

yeah TBH a 996 isn't really that great, S2K is a pretty legendary car, but the 996 specifically isn't, although the 911 is.

Rich Sandor 06-17-2009 11:45 PM

^ Lol wut?

Having driven both an '02 s2k and '02 996's, in anger, I'd take the 996, hands down. It's better in every possible way.

I wouldn't call the S2K legendary.. it's no more or less special than a 996.

ilvtofu 06-18-2009 08:48 AM

I guess from the 1980s till now I like to skip a gen with 911s, 964 and 996 weren't my faves. I still like them but not as much.

As a 993 guy I'll never forgive the 996 for introducing 911 to mainland C-lai's driving them around in Vancouver. It just doesn't feel as special anymore. but at least it's no cayenne XD

Based on that i'm pretty irrational for liking the 997 though,
I don't sound very convincing I guess...

but S2K and NSX are pretty legendary honda sports cars.
But maybe I agree with you that the 996 is way better, more practical and it's a porsche.

ilvtofu 06-18-2009 08:50 AM

-1 for the 964 this one is just atrocious...

screw it. get a 965 3.6 ;)

ilvtofu 06-18-2009 05:42 PM

Wow neone seen how much 930 turbos go for? I really like that body style much better than the 964 IMO and they're legendary for being deadly.
But for almost 50k for some of 'em i dunno.
996 turbos go for around the same!

No they don't. They over-build and over-engineer shit that frustrates the hell out of everybody.
