Router or Modem messed up?

recently i've been getting spikes in my internet connection where i get no internet for like a few mins and gets it back once every few hrs.. how can i tell whether it's the modem or the router that's acting up? (i don't have a spare router to try) whenever it happens i'm still connected to the router and can access and everything but no internet connection. any help is appreciated thx

try not using the router and see if you get the same problem? make sure you have your firewall on though when you do this. and do you notice ping spikes too? or your internet just gives out?

restart both of them first to see if the problem is gone.

then connect comp with modem to see if it's there.

it's more likely than not gonna be your router though

When you're having the problem...

1.) Try pinging your router. Do you get a reply?
2.) Try pinging a common website, like www.google.com. Do you get a reply?
3.) Try pinging an external IP address, like 74.125.127.104 (Google). Do you get a reply?

If no reply for #1, then most likely your router is the problem, possibly rebooting for no reason.

If reply for #1, but no reply for #2 and #3, then it's your actual Internet connection that's the problem.

If reply for #1, no reply for #2, but reply for #3, then it's likely a problem with the DNS servers that is being used.

thx for all the help i'm pretty sure it's problem with the modem.. only problem is.. shaw won't replace it.. they keep telling me the connections is good blah blah there's no problem..

Connect a computer directly to the modem and run a ping to www.google.ca or whatever, and if it drops out from time to time, call them and tell them that. It's irrefutable proof that something is wrong with the modem or Internet connection.
