Creating a custom convertible My friend and I had an interesting idea a few days ago. We would like to create a convertible minivan. Basically we would like to cut the roof off a minivan, while keeping the functionality of all the doors, seat belts etc. We are very mechanically inclined and have access to all the tools. We would even be willing to install a roll cage if we have to. I just read over most of the MVA and I didn’t find any part which specifically prohibited this kind off modification. What would we have to do to accomplish this legally? Thanks http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/7002/van2.jpg |
doesnt the headrest have to be made out of steel or something.... not sure if thats a law though..... |
how would you keep the door in the back working if the top support will be cut? |

You can virtually guarantee traffic police attention. If the van doesn't have a frame (unibody) you will immediately be removed from the highway. If it does, you will probably still end up with a VI if you can't show that you have passed one with the vehicle in this condition. As always, if you are going to try this, I would work hand in hand with your favorite inspection facility to make sure that they will pass whatever you are going to do, before you do it. |
good luck trying to get that **** to seal properly, and have no wind noise. Doesn't same van already have a panoramic roof? I wonder how much R&D that cost the automaker? Anyways good luck with your butcher shop. |
Changing the body style requires a mandatory inspection before the car goes back on the road. |
lol Top Gear did it, and make sure u drive it through a car wash when u build it |
Your gonna need some soarta roll cage.... definite frame damage |
Serious body re-enforcement> start with the newer model (96-01) and make it nice otherwise it will look too back yard and will get you pulled over more. I would just make a retractable roof but keep the sides |
move to surrey with all the other abominations |
