I'd love it if the Archos 5 or 7 could play avi or mkv files.

Archos 5/7 can play avi no problem. But if the avi contains AC3 (5.1 ch sound), then you need cinema plugins (also plays vob files from DVD)

mkv is still not allowed. but mp4 with wma at 720p works great. :)
