Anyone have a USB to SATA 2.5HDD cable?

Hi gaiz,

Just wondering if anyone has something like this:
http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=33...nufacture=Syba

My sister's laptop mobo died and I would like to recover the files on the HDD. Don't feel like spending $25 on a cable I'll probably only ever use once, so if anyone is nice enough to lend one to me for overnight or something, I could pay them $10 and some mcdicks or whatever.

Call me cheap or whatever, but I just don't see the point in investing in a tool to be used only ONCE EVER.

Please let me know, thanks!

Or, if you guys have any better (cheaper) alternatives feel free to post it.

if you have a desktop that has SATA connectors on the mobo, you should be able to hook up the HDD to the desktop...that would be an alternative.

someone correct me if i am wrong

Alphamale 06-12-2009 12:13 AM

^I don't have a desktop in the hizzouse.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm not sure if it would make a difference because aren't most desktop HDD's 3.5"? Mine is from a laptop and is 2.5". I'm not sure if that would make a difference or not. I've updated the original post of the drive connection.

even it is 2.5" you should still be able to hook it up to the desktop via SATA....well i guess it doesn't really matter anyways since you don't have a desktop at home.

monoprice.com should have the cable for cheap...but you'll have to wait for it to be shipped to you.

umm if I'm seeing that right, that piece with the pins on it has to be pulled off to expose the normal desktop hard drive style sata ports.
They only have that adaptor module there to accommodate the slot in design of the hard drive into the laptop.

just incase u didn't know.
(assuming all new laptops are the same with sata drives, mine had that adaptor chunk)

Hmm, I did not know but if I had bought the cable, I'm sure I would have figured it out. Thanks for the heads up!

SATA is identical 2.5" and 3.5". Your laptop HD is most likely pull out from HP/Compaq laptop. They use an adapter onto SATA for easy removal and other reason.
I have adapter like that in my drawer.

$5 can buy you a SATA to USB adapter from dealextreme. I ordered mine last week, but you need to use the power from your desktop. Dealextreme is down for a few days, or I will show you the link.

I also have a 2.5" (takes both IDE/SATA) USB enclosure. if you are close by, u can borrow it.

^Thanks for the offer but with your suggestion of the enclosure, I bought a cheap one and hopefully that will do. I haven't hooked it up yet but will there be any issues plugging the external HDD with an OS already installed into my Vista? Will there be problems recognizing files and folders? Just trying to gauge if I will run into any hiccups before I start.

There shouldn't be any problems. but if u want to make sure it works, it is probably a good idea if the external HD is vista certified.

i think he meant the vista is on the external HD that he is going to hook up.

it shouldnt be a problem. but i had experience that if you ever use vista hd in USB and plug into xp computer, there will be 2 different restore folders or recycle bin folder (both system folders) with 2 different naming methods.

it's annoying vista didnt use the same folder name as xp imo. :p
