Can someone help build me a custom tower?

hey guys i need help building a new tower hoping someone can help me out

looking to spend around 600max. tower only. no need for mouse/keyboard/screen/speakers

all parts will be bought local through sales at ncix or anitec etc.

i just want it to be awesome or great in terms of games for cod4/modernwarfare2/counterstrike source/starcraft 2

also want it to be fast for web browsing/youtube

the only thing im super concern about is leaving it on while i sleep to download and whatnots. my old one pisses the shit out of me cuz its uber loud.

a videocard that has a HDMI port for my 32" would be cool to.
also need a good 5.1 soundcard built in or seperate.

a big harddrive that would fit in my price range would be cool to.. i could spend another 50 or so if i can get a total of 1TB would be great :)

thanks for the help!

i guess ill blaze someone up if needed ;)

01-xtreme 06-15-2009 01:18 PM

wait till september for the i5. it'll be out of your price range but the announcement might change some prices.

terkan 06-15-2009 04:43 PM

i dunno man.. 600bux for a tower that'll be great for starcraft 2? i think you are pushing u luck

Vansterdam 06-16-2009 11:25 AM

how about good for all the other games i listed and OK for sc2? im willing to go up to around 700 with taxes.. hopefully i can get a good rig going with the deals on ncix or something cause i been without RS for like 3 months :(

roastpuff 06-16-2009 01:55 PM

Tada - 635 + tax, and it's more than capable of playing any of those games quite well.

Sales end today, though. Wait for tomorrow's sales and I'll e-build you a tower. Get the $50 assembly option, well worth it and so much less hassle. :)

It's not a particularly budget board... I have the same one and it's quite good. The AM2+ socket means he can drop in an AM3 processor when it's time to upgrade the CPU. 4 RAM slots are provided, which is usually not available on a "cheap" board. It's a mid-range one, fairly decent.

Vansterdam 06-16-2009 09:56 PM

Just gimme a ring and well work on something....

roastpuff 06-17-2009 12:27 PM

Screw the XP OS install... go d/l the Windows 7 RC1 from Microsoft. Free and it's stable and very impressive. I really like it - running on my primary rig, and I will upgrade come June 2010.

Vansterdam 06-17-2009 12:40 PM

i just need something thats media center compatible so i can hook it up to my xbox 360 lol, any other suggestions roastpuff? im not a big AMD fan, been a intel user all my life but i wouldent mind using AMD if the one im getting is good :)

Here's an updated one. 708 not including assembly before tax. The CPU is now triple-core instead of dual-core, the hard drive got a bit smaller to 750GB, and the videocard is a GTX260, but it'll still work great. :)

There was no case and PSU bundle, which drove up the price significantly. Pretty meh sale this week. :( Better get the order in first thing tomorrow morning, or the surprise specials might be gone.

Vansterdam 06-18-2009 10:38 AM

by the looks of it im prob gonna go with intel and a non cheap motherboard... 750$ budget MAX with taxes and everything... assembly wise i can probably jsut get a friend to do it..

any other suggestions?

i don't agree with roastpuff.

theres something about disabling a core because it didn't work properly that doesn't sit right with me. i'd stick to what you know and go intel. nothings changed. they're still doing it right.

i've built two rigs with the antec 300. one media based and one gaming based, both weren't quiet. but thats what u get for a cheap case. don't get me wrong, its a nice case, but it isn't quiet.

also the green series of WD HDD are pretty loud. it hums compared to the caviar editions.

also, if do decide to go with that mobo, you're wasting your money buying an sli power supply. it only has one pci-e slot.

that gigabyte board can also handle up to 1066 factory ram clocks. make full use of it. you probably won't be able to tell the difference between 3gb and 4gb ram but you will notice the difference ddr2-800 and ddr2-1066

totalling it up, you're looking for 650 before tax. its a squeeze for that you're asking for. to save a little cash, downgrade the vid card to a 250 or better yet, an older card that still comes with a dvi to hdmi dongle. the gtx260 is a highend card to play games on highsettings. unless you're willing to keep that up and dish money out every year to continue enjoying the eyecandy, don't bother. you'll be chocked when next year the better cards come out, games become more demanding, and you'll have to stepdown from the highsettings playing field. get a minimum card for what you think you need and if its not enough later, you'll have more money to upgrade. if it is enough, you have more cash in your pocket.

what ever your choice may be, get this:

http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=35940&promoid=1146

i highly doubt you're in the price range for a card that demands more than that. and its cheap. its only on for today while quantities last so act quick.

Vansterdam 06-18-2009 12:41 PM

thanks for all the help. i found this option used on craiglist for 550-600 what do you guys think?

Dual Core Processor LGA775 Conroe 2.33GHZ 1333FSB 4MB Good Overclocker

ASUS P5K-E/WIFI-AP ATX LGA775 P35 DDR2 1333FSB 2PCI-E16 3PCI 2PCI-E1 SATA2 Sound WLAN Motherboard Good board for Overclocking

OCZ Platinum XTC REV.2 PC2-6400 4GB 4X1GB DDR2-800 CL4-4-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory

Western Digital SE16 320GB SATA2 7200RPM 16MB 8.9MS Hard Drive

OCZ StealthXStream 600W ATX12V 20/24PIN Active PFC ATX Power Supply 120MM Fan

Coolermaster CM 690 Mid Tower Black ATX Case

am thinking of buying this rig used, or if its worth it then shell out the extra 150$ or so and get a brand new tower.

roastpuff 06-18-2009 01:20 PM

Those are fairly old parts. The 8800GT in particular is getting a bit long in the tooth, and the CPU is not spectacular. The lack of HDD space also kinda strikes against it... If you can get it down to $450 or so I'd say it was worth it. But be prepared to get CPU and GPU upgrades when SCII comes out.

EDIT: 01extreme, whatever the case, don't cheap out on the PSU. He may only have one PCI-E slot, but newer cards will require more robust power solutions, which that CM 500W PSU won't provide... They need higher amperage supplies, which only 600+ W PSU's will provide reliably. I also prefer sticking with Corsair, OCZ, Antec, Seasonic or PCP&C PSU's which are generally accepted as good.

Vansterdam 06-19-2009 10:26 AM
