You've done a pretty good job of not overdoing it. It can look really gimmicky when overdone.

Is it the same thing with HDR? What's the difference.

You can totally tell the horrible job on all 3 images!
First one is worse with the sun not even matching the reflection in the water.
Here's one I did by hand, took 10 minutes |

the first one looks weird, the left 3/4 of the pic has a darker exposure where as the right 1/4 looks brighter.

you see, there are these giant things in the sky called clouds.....
From what I can gather, tonemapping is like the discount version of HDR. Where HDR uses multiple images at varying exposures, tonemapping uses a .RAW image and creates the multiple exposures from it. As far as being "overdone" or not, it's subjective and obviously not everyone is going to agree. These are the first images I've tried in Photomatix and I left all the settings at default. From there I opened them in photoshop to tweak the exposure if necessary. IIRC, I bumped the 1st two down about 1/3rd of a stop and the 3rd is just straight out of Photomatix.

I dont think that they are that bad. Some tonemapping/HDR is far to overdone.
I like the 3ed one the best

The first one doesn't work so well because of the sun. I like the second one, but wish the sky was all a similar color. The third one is ok, but pushing into the overdone area. Neat area you have over there.

Upon further review (I posted at work when I wasn't supposed to be surfing the net), the second and third are better than the first pic for sure.

You get so used to seeing shots of Vancouver in this part of RS so that when you come across photos of a lake right down the road it totally caught me off guard.

Swan Lake crew fo' lyf! haha
I think I have to agree with some of the comments you guys have made; #2 and particularly #3 worked out the best. I had a couple real life people specifically single out #1 as being their favorite of the group but I don't see why. I just assumed they were seeing something I was oblivious to.
Thx for the feedback guys!

You should also take the time to clean up the dust from your sensor or the image, it's very distracting
