School zone cameras

so... i remember passing one of these a while back close to Douglas college.
There's this elementary school with a speed zone of 30km/h. There was a digital radar (one of those thats in place forever) and clocks your speed... When I was going it read like 36, and then since I was going over 30, it had like a continuous flash. AFter that, it had 36 flashing for like 3 times, then next car.

Are those cameras legit? Or just to catch your attention? I don't know whether they will be sending a ticket so I'm just curious as to whether anyone else knows?
Just watched the news and apparently there are a couple in richmond as well..

Not cameras. Just tell you your speed limit and a strobe light comes on if you are over the limit.

One Right by my house, sometimes after school hours I go faster than 30 there, after about 60km/h it doesn't clock you =)

Phew scared me I though they were trying to implement these, I drive by too many school zones everyday,

but yeah i've seen these, they're pure BS and waste of money

canucksfan 06-17-2009 08:45 PM

Does the job though...i guarantee you everyone brakes immediately when that thing flashes, especially during school zone hours.

disagree. as much of an aggressive driver as I am, I learned a long time ago to drive 25-30 kph in a school zone during school hours.

also, when my bro had his kid

most of peeps, even parents floor it in there, i havent seen any in van city though and those r good deterrents for speeding.

better than speedbumps - let's put it that way

yeah i did. and it put me in an awful mood right away thinking i was getting a ticket in the mail.

hmm, if you're used to seeing them on your commute and know they're fake cameras I think lots of ppl will just ignore them, and even though speed bumps are so annoying they will actually encourage me to slow down, My school is surrounded by speed bumps... but the idiots driving to school still fly over them and scratch their cars on them but thats less than 10 ppl.

Speed bumps are obviously more effective but definitely way more annoying.

n'drew 06-17-2009 10:16 PM

They have them on the sea to sky, me and my friend got clocked at 160.

ilvtofu 06-17-2009 10:55 PM

^Lol they'd encourage me to speed in that case
see how fast your car actually goes

ilvtofu 06-17-2009 10:56 PM

needta do PGR speed camera RS competitions now

124Y 06-17-2009 11:26 PM

LOL there's one of these "cameras" set up in front of a school near my house. The thing flashes even on non-school hours and days, so it is kinda as it confuses the shit outta ppl when everyone's supposed to drive 50km/h on a non-school day.

Harvey Specter 06-17-2009 11:37 PM

Better hope we never get real speed cams like the ones they have in the UK.

Shun Izaki 06-18-2009 12:16 AM

Did you know on those 2 digit speed meters, on some of them if you go past 100, you will cause it to go Er. :)

CP.AR 06-18-2009 07:38 AM

I got one near where I live, and the one there only goes up to 35, then it starts to flash 30 and small letters reading "SLOW DOWN" come up with a strobe light.

But other than that, it is nothing more but a deterrent

hotjoint 06-18-2009 08:52 AM

I've seen alot of these in school zone, scared the shit outta me a few times :lol

ilvtofu 06-18-2009 08:54 AM

I've seen them in richmond quite a bit, but are there any in vancouver?

E=mc˛ 06-18-2009 10:29 AM

never seen these but really think it's a good deterrent as ppl have said. I dont slow down to 30 but I do slow down. its a bad habit and im definitely not proud of it.
but yea i think speed bumps would do a better job.

Soundy 06-18-2009 10:38 AM

Sometimes when you see those speed-reader boards (THEY ARE NOT CAMERAS), you'll find a cop not much further down the road. It's one thing to not notice your speed and then get nailed by the cop; sometimes they'll give you a little leeway. But if you've just passed a flashing speed-reader board and still haven't slowed down, they'll have no mercy.

CP.AR 06-18-2009 11:01 AM

I'll take a picture for you guys next week when I become a "volunteer driver" for my brother's school's Playland day

Apparently you're new to town or new to driving. In either case, congratulations!

They're annoying because they always set off the radar detector. No big deal though, because I don't really speed any more and just use the detector because I already have it.

Aetios 06-18-2009 06:23 PM

Went through one of those in a school zone going a little fast by accident. Recieved a warning letter in my mail. I rolled a joint with it.

heleu 06-18-2009 10:47 PM

There's one on No.5 rd on a post that flashes 52,55,56, but it's just a fake. There's no difference in reading even if you're going 80.
