Vehical Modifacations
 

Hey so this winter a buddy and I converted his 2wd Jeep Cherokee to 4wd and he is now wondering what to do when he insures it. Does he have to do anything special or can he still insure it as the 2wd and not have any problems?

I'm sure that is the best solution and better than any answer you can get from RS.

The insurance is not the concern, what is of concern, is how the vehicle was modded. Are all the suspension parts properly installed and the vehicle correctly aligned, are the brake lines rerouted, was anythign done to the frame? That sort of thing. Best way is to take it to a good Provincial Inspection centre and have them do a proper inspection before driving it again. Last thing you want is something seizing or falling off, or the handling being compromised. (c) (i), 2nd part would apply here.."design changes other than established by the manufacturer"

Application
25.20 This Part applies to a vehicle that was

(a) disposed of as salvage and subsequently rebuilt,

(b) altered by changes to its suspension height by more than 10 cm from the original basic specification of the vehicle manufacturer,

(c) altered so that its

(i) freight carrying capacity has been increased beyond the original gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle, or by design changes other than those established by the manufacturer of the vehicle, or

(ii) seating capacity has been increased, or

(d) built after January 1, 1971 from new or used parts, other than a trailer with a licensed gross vehicle weight of 1 400 kg or less, and that does not display the statement of compliance under the Motor Vehicle Safety Act (Canada).

This is good advice!

Well with the Cherokees it is a direct bolt in conversion so everything that we put in was from a 4x4 Cherokee. All of it bolts in and no modifications to the frame what so ever.

I would suspect that the suspension height was changed though.

if it was at max 1/2 an inch.
