Now, fake 'Made in India' Chinese garments in Nigeria
24 Jun 2009, 2026 hrs IST, IANS

NEW DELHI: The textiles ministry has asked the commerce department to take up the issue of Chinese garments sporting fake "Made in India" tags being
sold in Nigeria, a senior official said here on Wednesday.

"Garments with fake 'Made in India' tags are being sold in Nigeria," Textiles Secretary Rita Menon said.

Recently, Nigerian authorities confiscated a shipment of drugs, with "Made in India" labels, which were found to have originated in China.

"We are aware of the unfair and unjust practice," Menon said.

"This is a serious matter. We have written to the commerce ministry and they will take it up through the diplomatic channels with the concerned governments (Nigeria and China)," she added.

"Let my minister meet the commerce minister first and then we will decide what we have to do."

Reacting to the development, Confederation of Indian Textile Industry said: "It is a cause for concern and we have to gauge its impact. China is the largest exporter of textiles, with 25 percent of market share. We have just 4 percent of market share. So they are a threat in the medium term."

According to the Export Promotion Council for Handicraft (EPCH), export of textiles and ready-made garments - cotton, natural silk, woollen and man-made yarn - to Nigeria virtually halved from Rs.224.7 crore in 2006-07 to Rs.119.2 crore in 2007-08 because of the fake Chinese products.

India's ambassador to Nigeria Mahesh Sachdeva has already alerted the commerce secretary about the consignment of Chinese-made medicines impounded in Nigeria with fake "Made in India" labels.

Subsequently, the Indian government lodged a strong protest with the Chinese embassy in New Delhi and also with China's foreign trade ministry in Beijing.

What's the point for copying that, to sell it cheaper? :D

hk20000 06-24-2009 08:29 AM

^ on a business standpoint it makes a lot of sense to mark ur products made in another country. You can fake the "quality" and if something goes wrong, the general poor impression now goes to the country you "said" it's made in.

China products are probably cheaper than Indian products to begin with.

^^^Chinese peeps are generally cheaper that indians (who are very cheap), so this makes perfect sense, harhar.....

according to master beaters (russel peters), indians are the cheapest race, followed closely by the chinese, then the jews are 3rd (not cheap, just thrifty)...then followed by the LV joke

Actually, it makes perfect sense. It's not that couple of cents you save. It's about the market share. If China fake Indian products, they can increase their market share or, even better, eliminate India from the market. That is pretty smart to be honest.

China and India should not be labeled as 3rd world, with all the development they have, it just doesnt seem right.

development is pretty much taking place in urban area, in indian and china still a huge gap. Plus infant mortality rate, life expec. etc counts and that adds up = developed nation.

skyxx 06-24-2009 03:16 PM

If you mark your products "Made in JAPAN". Asian people In general with buy it.......

slammer111 06-24-2009 03:22 PM

In Africa, goods from China/India are viewed with the same prestige as how people in China view stuff made in the USA.

The worst part is that I'd bet half (more like 99%) of the poor fools in the textile factory in China don't even know what the labels they're making say.

shenmecar 06-24-2009 03:47 PM

well yeah, my aunt bought a shirt in China and I said "I LOVE CEMISTRY"

!SG 06-24-2009 05:46 PM

whatever it takes to make a buck, thats what happens when capitalism is allowed to freely develop in a country

mmmk 06-24-2009 06:06 PM

so dangerous when it comes to faking drugs...

misteranswer 06-24-2009 07:00 PM

All the "reasons" you guys have listed don't make sense. What does a private manufacturer care?

The only possible conclusion is that it's a product that's only made in india, so to make it seem like it's authentic it obviously has to have the label "made in india" on it.
