ICBC Insurance Discount Kinda tried looking it up but didnt find any info. I want to know when ICBC actually starts calculating your insurance discount? I heard it is from when you get your L license? Cos the problem is I got my L in Jan but the insurance broker says August is when my discount goes up, so in essence I'm paying more that I'm supposed to for 8 months and I want to know how ICBC actually determines when to start counting your discount. Thanks |
Some say it's from your Birthday, some say it's from the day you get your L some say it's your N personally i thought it was from my L, which is when my discount changes. ask an autoplan broker. |
definitely not bday..probably not N either..cos they started counting 7 months after I got my L...and I got my N 1.5 year after my L..so thats why i'm confused... i've tried asking autoplan brokers..they don't know a thing... |
http://www.icbc.com/autoplan/costs/c...riables._frag_ if that isn't enough, there is a ICBC contact number at the bottom of the page. |
I think they start counting when you get ur L |
your license birthday, meaning when you got your license. i celebrate my license birthday on the road by letting people in my lane and yielding to pedestrians |
You can call ICBC and get a one-time rate change where they'll adjust you're claim scale. (You might also need to call you're Autoplan broker too.) |

My discount didn't start til I started buying insurance from ICBC. Had my license for 2 years before buying a car and my insurance started at 0 |

^^ ie. my birthday is in may, i bought and insured my car in april (11 months after getting my L, before I had got my N) so my insurance has been 5% behind discount since I've had my car.. i believe that's how it works, i was talking to my autoplan broker about it back in april when I was renewing |
^ i don't think so...My discount started according to icbc 7 months after I got my L, but I didn't insure a car till 5 this April and its been 5 years roughly since I got my L. I currently have 20% discount and I think I should be getting 25%. |

ICBC calculates your discount on how long you've been insured, not how long you've been licensed. I've had my license for five years this August, but my discount is only 15% because I have not been insured that entire time. The discount is based on how many months you've been insured. You don't build up a discount by holding a license but not having a policy in your name (I'm not sure what this means for people driving company cars where the company holds the insurance - anyone know?). At least, that's my understanding of it. |
^^^If things have not changed in the last little while, that is not true. It is dependent on how long you had your license for. I had instant 25% when I finally insured a vehicle in my name. And I've also heard what Shantz has mentioned. I believe ICBC will pro-rate your discount based on your license date for one time only. I would talk to your broker, they can call ICBC and confirm your discounts and probably do the pro-rating thing for you! |
when you get your L your discount starts i believe and it drops 5 % every 2 years |
That's weird. I got my license (L) in 2000. It is now 2009 and I just insured my car for the first time and I am at the maximum discount. In fact, I should be getting road star soon. |

i gots me 30% bumping to 35% this year!!!!*knock on wood* |
i got my L in 2006 and now im at 20% |
i thought they start counting when you get your Class 5..then -5% each year up to 35% off. That or every two year.. |
I know people who've had their license for 13+ years just for the sake of having a driver's license. They haven't been behind the wheel of a vehicle since they passed their exam. What you guys are saying is if they went out and bought a car, they'd automatically have roadstar status? That doesn't sound right. |

icbc doesn't care about how long you've had insurance, only how long you have been accident free since obtaining your license! like I said I started off with 25% right away. |
I had no discount when I bought my car 2 years after I was licensed . Are you sure your parents didn't put you on their insurance when you got licensed? Because technically you would be insured at that point and would discounts would be carried on when you insured your own car. My parents were too dumb to do that |
