popping noise when playing disc?

I actually have 2 questions:

1: Once in a while when I'm watching a movie on dvd or bluray, I keep hearing these popping noises. It happened again when I played a CD yesterday.

The first time it happened, I was playing a DVD through a bluray disc player, which is connected to the receiver. Same thing happened again yesterday when I was playing a CD through the PS3, which is also connected to the receiver. I’m no audiophile so I’m completely clueless as to why this is happening. Can someone explain what needs to be done to fix this??

2:Since I got the PS3, I have an extra bluray disc player kickin’ around. I told my dad he can have it whenever upgrades his TV (he decided to go for an LED TV, if that matters). However, he doesn’t want to upgrade his receiver, which does not have HDMI in/output. To get the picture quality, he can plug an HDMI cable directly from the bluray player to the TV, but can he use a different cable to connect to his receiver for the sound? (component, composite, etc?) Or will the hdmi cable connected to the TV override it? I hope I’m making sense…

TIA!! :)

where's the poping sound coming from? The player or receiver?
to answer 2)
answer is usually yes. It's 100% do-able on PS3..so im sure it's doable on blu-ray players. Im sure it's somewhere in the settings?

Sorry, should've mentioned this part: the popping noise is actually coming from the speakers
