Need Help: Retrieve data from "Old" SATA HDD to "New" desktop PC
 

Trying to get my files from my old SATA HDD from my old computer (which doesn't start anymore - thinking mobo problems)

So far I've tried taking the old SATA HDD and plugging it into the new computer but when I open My Computer, the HDD does not show.

I then open up Disk Management and find the HDD (labelled as Dynamic drive, "INVALID")

I right-click the HDD and it's giving me option to convert to Basic Disk (But I will have to format the drive to do so, but I want to retrieve the data first)

Is there any way to retrieve my old data?


ALSO: I went to BestBuy and bought an external hdd enclosure and tried hooking up with USB with the same result. HDD is not seen in My Computer, only found in Disk Management but only giving option to change to Basic Disk if I format first.

*Other info: The old HDD was just extra file storage on my old PC, no operating system was installed

I doubt if you can retrieve your old data without professional help. You will have to revert to your backups.

Hmm, interesting... something definitely wrong with that hard drive.

I would suggest trying data recovery software to see if it can read the drive at all.

Usually if your system can detect the drive, that's a good sign that you may be able to recover stuff from it...

Ok, I know it sounds like a stupid question but you said your old computer doesn't start, what exactly happen? Did it just stop working one day? The reason I ask is are you sure your HDD didn't get damaged? I had a similar issue with my old computer last summer. The PSU overheated and fried my mobo and damaged my HDD. Also, when you plug in your HDD does it show up in your bios? I would also check your jumper settings to see if that makes a difference.

Download Hiren's Boot CD and use one of the data recovery programs and see if the files on the drive can be enumerated, and if so, you can transfer it to another hard drive...
