DVD Kiosks at Safeway

Anyone used it ? Seems like a great deal for $1.79 rentals. Was scrolling through and they are new releases and a selection of older movies. It doesn't tell you if the movie is in stock or not though... Wonder if there are hidden charges.

Looks like this:

They have two inserts. One that gives you the dvd the other that accepts it. The top one will receive the DVD for return and the bottom will dispense your DVD.

I saw this at the Safeway on Robson and a couple was looking through the videos, look's pretty convenient!

We had a Kiosk in our store for about 6 months. With ours you were charged every day it was late and after 20 days it was yours to keep.

It pre authorizes $100 just like when you pay at the pump.

twitchyzero 07-06-2009 12:19 PM

does it have barcode on the disc itself? How does it know if it actually has a disc inside..or if someone just put in a fake disc

matrixfwd 07-06-2009 04:30 PM

I gave it a try last night. It spits out a DVD stored in a mini square case with the barcode exposed. Kind of works like an ATM. The bar code is printed on the DVD disc. When you return the disc, it will scan the DVD bar code. With taxes, it is $2 even for a new release. I think Rogers charges $5.99 for new release!

They have new releases for sure and a small selection of old movies. I think the machine is more focused on new releases. I will get another movie tonight.

twitchyzero 07-07-2009 05:26 PM

i think rogers is 2.99 for newly released DVD and 4.99 for newly released blu-ray

matrixfwd 07-07-2009 09:19 PM

When did you see this price? It was $5.99 just a few weeks ago at Rogers. The old movies are 3 for $9 for rental.

I'm kind of choked that they don't accept debit cards as that would make is so much more accessible for folks still in highschool/early post secondary.

The problem is that with a debit card they can't charge you later if you don't return the movie.

cool, too bad I dont rent movies anymore :)

haha true that. If it's a new release that's out on dvd that means I would have downloaded that movie off the net weeks before that. AH wells good deal though for $1.79

XtC_13aBy 07-09-2009 09:13 PM

do they have it at all of the safeway locations?!

and it's true that a new release would be around $6 if rented at rogers.. I go almost every couple weeks.

wahyinghung 07-09-2009 11:07 PM

Didn't they use to have these similar machines in 7-11 or Macs????

haha yup. Great deal but free downloads is greater. I wonder how retail video stores are doing now since downloading and renting online has increased.

billboa 07-10-2009 02:58 PM

so do u need a credit card?

twitchyzero 07-10-2009 07:45 PM

that's why i'd still rent the odd blu-ray movie..but not frequently cause most store still has a small collection (newly releases only has a few copies unlike DVDs)

azzurro32 07-12-2009 12:14 PM

i used the vending machine type at 711 when i lived in west van all the time. moved to richmond and cant find any 711's with em. found the safeway one. used it once. their selection isnt as great as the ones at 711 however
