I know oakley makes prescription squash goggles, as well as hockey visors, so maybe try like an Iris who is a oakley retailer/dealer that also does prescription stuff

Are you looking for welding goggles or just safety googles??
Oakley M-Frame with clear prescription lens awesome combo. Make sure its the clear lens with the CSA/ANSI rating for safety.

You can't blindly listen to everything your instructors say. I guarantee you they only heard the stories from someone else. I weld with contacts all day without a problem. But don't take my word for it either, 2 mins to Google search will give you many more sources debunking this myth.
