need some new super budget computer suggestions

A friend asked me to help him replace his two old computers. He's basically bitching that some videos lag and facebook flash programs don't really work. What do you guys recommend for parts for a super budget system? This comp will hardly get used. Maybe two hours or so a week.

Criteria:
-Cheap
-Use to Watch videos, Surf Internet, Send Email
-Plan to reuse old case, dvd drive, hdd, psu (if possible)

Thanks!

you don't need an aftermarket HSF for a G31 board...the stock HSF can handle heat quite well up to 3ghz

E5200...o/c it @ 12.5x233 = 2.9ghz
if cman333's friend wants some decent speed, spend another $20 on a EP45 board....4.0ghz ftw

roastpuff 07-09-2009 09:58 PM

The stock HSF sucks in terms of noise etc. That's why I got it for the E2200, but then I jumped on a Athlon X2 7750BE deal and now I have spare parts.

The G31 board comes with on-board graphics as well! HDMI output, too.

Man...so many opinions.

I will definately consider anyone's spare parts for this built. He technically needs two comps. One to hookup to his TV and watch movies. Other to go online and play stupid facebook games.

Maybe something that can watch mkv files and has DVI output.

^ make sure you read some reviews regarding the HDMI <--> LCD TV problems...
a lot of on board video (even with HDMI port) out there just won't correctly display at 1080p

there are much cheaper setup out there, like e1200 + $50 ECS board w/ video. + some
stolen ram lol, it depends on how much he wants to spend, really. If he wants Win7 to be
installed later on, for sure E5200 is decent enough

Anyone have feedback on some of this stuff? Is it at least half decent?

What kind of PSU would I need? Does the G31 board have onboard vid card?

His TV is only 720P capable....so outputing 1080P isn't technically needed.

I'd say the less he can spend the better. He's not cheap, but really not into computers. He only goes online to play facebook games and look online to find things to buy. He was thinking he would need to spend like 500+....but I told him for his type of use it's not needed. His existing computer(s) cannot even run those facebook flash games smoothly.

Thanks everyones input again

I'd definitely go with AMD with the 780G onboard graphic (if you are not using a dedicated video card)

It is 10x better than intel onboard graphic and allows you to play basic video games and HD video smoothly.

InvisibleSoul 07-10-2009 11:40 AM

Well, since it's two computers we're talking about here, I would recommend not buying people's spare parts (unless they have two of everything) because it would probably be nice to have two computers with the same hardware... makes troubleshooting and repairing easier in the future.

I would recommend getting the cheapest motherboard and the cheapest dual core CPU and 2GB RAM.

If you're not adding an external videocard, any 350W PSU built recently to ATX 2.0 standards will work. Yes, it has onboard video - GMA3100 GPU.

i've had this problem before but it is actually dependent on the video card more than the tv itself. i had a x850xt and 8800gt that couldn't display resolution correctly (overscan), than i got a 4350 and now it fits perfectly pixel to pixel
