1 1/2 Din Head units

Anyone know where I can get one?
My car still uses the original tape deck :(
If i bring it in to a place like future shop or a car audio specialist
Can they fabricate something easily so that i can put a single din and still look half decent?
Can they maybe fabricate a little storage compartment or something like that?

1990TSI 07-13-2009 03:29 PM

what car is it?

and don't go to futureshop for car audio. That's like going to walmart for a turbo kit install.

ilvtofu 07-13-2009 03:47 PM

oh ic, it's the Z31 it even has a weird slanted shape too not like a regular rectangular head unit...

It really is quite ugly with the leftover plastic, so i was wondering if that area could be made into a storage compartment.
Mine will be worse because my interior is blue

There's nothing wrong with going to Future Shop for a head unit install... You may get a novice installer working on your that may take a while but I'm sure they'll get the job done.

However the vehicle you have a quite a tough install. The only kits available are the ones in the picture you've attached. A smaller more specialized shop may be able to fabricate something for you. Then again an experienced installer a large chain store like Future Shop or Best Buy may be able to build something as well.

ilvtofu 07-13-2009 05:58 PM

so future shop does have the equipment to fabricate something like that?
What are some good places for this sort of job?
Sponsors?

I was wondering if i can get like a package deal since i also want a remote for my power doors which i know future shop won't give me

catalin 07-13-2009 06:28 PM

This is the only kit they would have;

Least i think so, it's been a while since I've worked there nor have I kept in touch. If you ask around the install bays managers you may be able to get some help. I'm not saying for sure but I was just really just rebutting 1990tsi comment.

What remote are you looking for?

ilvtofu 07-13-2009 07:18 PM

Any sort of remote really, my car came with power locks, but no remote so it should be fairly easy? I know nothing on this area though.

Where'd u find that?

catalin 07-13-2009 07:35 PM

www.bestkits.com is what Future Shop carries.
Other places will have kits by www.metraonline.com and www.scosche.com

What year is your car? I don't think that it would have come with a factory keyless entry system... maybe someone else can jump in. But I think you'd need an aftermarket keyless entry system or an alarm.

ilvtofu 07-13-2009 07:52 PM

The car has an alarm an when you turn the key to drivers door it opens passengers as well so i'm assuming it has power locks LOL
Its an 88

Does this look decent?
http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/pts/1244674084.html
I realize the trim around it looks pretty half assed, but i could probably dress it up a bit easily

catalin 07-13-2009 08:32 PM

Looks like a great interior. That Alpine stereo in there has a Sony sleeve, nice. That's what it would look like with the kit I mentioned above.

Do you know the brand of alarm that is in it? Or does it arm and disarm with the key in the door?

ilvtofu 07-14-2009 02:37 PM

I think it's a factory, yeah it disarms when you turn the key, I don't think there's really any other way though lol, theres no buttons or nething LOL

I'll see if I can get that kit for cheap from that craigslist guy :)

orgasm_donor 07-14-2009 03:14 PM

One of the sponsors here can help you with that. At my shop I can even make a nice looking face that'll cover up the rest of that hole. It would look better than the pre-fab plastic stuff you find and you'd be surprised at how quick and how cheap it can be.

ilvtofu 07-14-2009 03:48 PM

oh sounds good (not trying to play with words here...)
How much are we looking at.

If you look at the pic on craigslist it looks like he used the panel to make an aux jack

catalin 07-14-2009 05:02 PM

You can maybe have a small storage pocket built into there or something like that. Sounds Good should do a great job.
The keyless entry would require an aftermarket module with one actuator installed in the drivers door.

ilvtofu 07-14-2009 05:46 PM

Damn this all sounds so tempting, But i wanna sell my car now :(

an S13 is way easier to put a stereo into, I know what you're thinking, don't worry.

ilvtofu 07-17-2009 12:02 PM

Yeah.. you can't do anything to the Z31, everything is so rare

ilvtofu 08-07-2009 03:03 PM

Anyone know if i can use a GM 1.5 din head unit on my car?
Or do i need some sort of adaptor?

orgasm_donor 08-07-2009 06:51 PM

You'll need a reverse radio harness and an antenna adptor at least depending on the age and what vehicle it came from. You may also need a bit of custom bracket-making to make it all secure. GM deck though? I wouldn't bother personally.

ilvtofu 08-07-2009 07:41 PM

^lol i just want a CD player, but probably making a custom adapter for a single din would be better...
