building new system for a light user

so pretty much i'm helping a friend build a very cheap system
enough to watch movies. listen to music and browse the web since the old one she had was a crappy emachine which the psu blew and took everything with it

so im going to use the old case and the new psu i bought for it already which is a 350w

Intel Pentium Dual-Core E5200 89.95
Gigabyte GA-EG41M-US2H - Intel G45 89.95
OCZ Value Series 1GB PC2-6400 x2 12.95 x 2 = 25.90
wd 500gb 59.95
Philips Brilliance 22" WideScreen LCD 199.95

will this run on 350w PSU?

im thinking of using a AMD x2 7750 if that is faster? or AMD X2 7850

roastpuff 07-14-2009 06:59 PM

That'll run just fine.

The AMD won't be a huge difference compared to E5200 for the tasks listed. If the total becomes more expensive then no point getting them.

Why did you spring for the G45-based board, though? The E5200 + that board is more expensive than the AMD bundle that NCIX has, here: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...s&promoid=1187 Even picking up a G31-based motherboard, which has the GMA3100 GPU on board, is more than enough and shaves ~$20 off the price of the system.

If you're not O/Cing the E5200, the 7550 is as fast as the Intel. Both processors are fast enough to fulfill most needs, and since your friend seems to be a very light user, she'll be fine. The AMD X2 7750 BE (unlocked multiplier, very easy O/C - most users achieve ~3ghz stable on stock cooler with just raising multiplier) is cheaper than the E5200, and you can pick up cheap AM2+/AM3 motherboards too.

yeah, sure, why not...tell her to pay you $470

then swap the cpu with E1200....and cheap $50 motherboard
she won't notice if you keep the money ;)

You should shop around more...especially when building a budget system:
For the deals that aren't @ NCIX, just tell them price match...Direct Canada is the same company anyways.

E5200 - $79.88 http://www.directcanada.com/products...ufacture=INTEL

GB GA-EG41M-US2H - $79.51 http://www.directcanada.com/products...cture=GIGABYTE

OCZ 2GB RAM - $19.99 (after $5 rebate)
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...2&promoid=1187

And here's a cheaper Acer 22" LCD for $179.99:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...8&promoid=1187

Easy $45 savings right there.

--------------------
Or if you don't mind going AMD, just go for the bundle roastpuff posted:
http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...s&promoid=1187

$124.99 for mobo & CPU
+ $19.99 for RAM
+ $179.99 for Monitor
+$59.95 HDD
= $384.92

Opposed to your bundle (with the new prices i found) @ $419.32

The AMD will be more than enough for a light user.

newegg has Phenom X4 945 + 780G MB for <$220
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/ComboDe...t=Combo.212192

CPU is good enough for a mid/high end gaming rig (faster than intel e8400), but at this price I wouldn't mind getting it even for a light user.

Um, NCIX is in Burnaby, too. Did you know that? Right by Metrotown... Anitec has less selection. And prices aren't as good as NCIX.

What brand is the PSU? make sure its reliable.. Dont want another blow out :P

lilaznviper 07-15-2009 02:15 PM

Foxconn is the psu brand

asian_XL 07-15-2009 07:14 PM

no worry, 350w is powerful enough if you are using onboard video.
