R12 (there is no R12a) is more efficient than R134a.. R134a requires more pressure.. However comes 2011 both will be illegal. By the way the R number is to describe the chemical molecule of the refrigerant. the a suffix to denote the unbalanced isomer.

Isn't R12A just propane?

You can't get it anymore. In the states, you might get lucky and find a shop with reclaimed R12. I know a few lucky '91 MR2 owners down there who lucked out when they did their expansion valve recalls and had their AC's filled with R12

No. That's HC12... HC = HydroCarbon

There is NO R12A!

How much did his work cost you?

Just wondering, how much would it cost to just refill my R12 system with R134a?

fliptuner 07-27-2009 11:52 AM

You'd be throwing your money away.

Just use the diy kit mentioned above

$30ish if you buy the kit in the US, $50 i think from canadian tire

thing is, you have to evacuate all the R12 from your system before filling with R134a.

i tried venting whatever was in the system into the atmosphere and got nothing so i assume whatever was in had already leaked out

I've seen an R12 compatible kit at walmart

You can't really use R134a with a system that was designed to be used with R12. The composition of the two is completely different and you need the parts to accomodate R134. Even after discharging the system of any remaining R12, filling it with R134 will not result in the A/C working to its maximum efficiency.

Would it still keep you a bit chilly on a blazing hot day in stand-still highway traffic?

In theory you could, but you would cause the two coolant to fractuate. Since a R12 system run at a higher pressure, R134a will work fine in the system, however until the compressor and fitting seize and crack.

They are all HC12 systems.

And remember you have to have a PSI gauge to figure out how much you need for your application. A small can won't do you much good, if your system is bone dry empty.

Do a proper diagnosis BEFORE you fill the HC12.. they are flammable.. you really don't want your car to literally cook when you are stuck in traffic do you?
