file recovery anyone have any recommended file recovery programs out there, my partition crashed from a failed windows update, so i rolled back to previous image and now all my stuff is gone. i tried easyrecovery and for some god dam reason it wont run in vista. any other options out there? |
First off, stop using that computer immediately. The more you use it, the more likely you'll be unable to recover files. Get Hiren's Boot CD. Connect the hard drive as a slave on another computer and run one of the numerous file recovery programs on Hiren's. |
i already stopped using that hdd since i discovered the all the files were missing, i now have the hdd plugged into another computer and trying all sorts of "software" to try and recover the files, majority of the softwares dont work jack. |
http://www.easeus.com/ used it twice with success. |
ok a little update i used hiren's boot cd, and used easyrecovery pro in what i believe is running in DOS mode. i played around with the settings and it "seem" like it's finding all the missing files, but NOW, when i try and select the files to recover, anything that contains huge amounts of files, eg the "LOSTFILES" folder, the program freezes and i'll have to restart the computer. or am i suppose to wait wait and wait for a long long time? |
wait a long time. |
http://lifehacker.com/393084/how-to-...-free-software I've used Recuva (http://www.recuva.com/) with great success myself. |
a little more update i used recuva as kardboard suggested, it seems to be doing a prety good job at finding lost files and stuff, but what i want the most are my firefox bookmarks, and recuva found like 10 of them named "bookmarks XX-XX-XX.json" which are firefox formats, but now god dam firefox either a cannot read the files because its too TOO curroupted, or b firefox is having its own problems reading their own fking formats which proves true with a google search, this is pissing me off so god dam much, i scaned the ssd like 50 times. as for easyrecovery, i only had 1 successful attempt out of the 20 times i scaned the hdd with that software. it'll either a stop working under windows enviorment, eg. i click scan, and the program crashes, or b the dos version (via hiren's boot cd)CRASHES TOO. it'll start the scan and boot me out of the software back into DOS mode. all i ask if for 1 god dam bookmark file back. FUCK. |
SpinRite 6 pretty much everything else is based off this one. www.spinrite.com |

And this is why you use Xmarks for Firefox. :) |
^ appearently no. firefox USED to do .html files, but since 3.0 they're using .JSON format to keep bookmarks. and lots and lots of people are having trouble importing bookmarks and doing the switch between .HTML<->.JSON and since it's a .JSON file, renaming it to .HTML won't work. sighh i just want all the bookmarks back, i dont care about anything else on that HDD. and yea i never knew about xmarks or foxmarks until recently while doing some digging to see how the hell i can fix the bookmarks. |
if the data is really important to you, consider giving 1stdatarecovery.com a try. i've recommended many users to them and they've had great success. free price quote, and approx $600-800 is the price they've paid so far. and no, the json is corrupted. see if there are other json or html in that profile and maybe they have that bookmark too. another one not yet mentioned is getdataback for ntfs. i've had some luck with it. |
