Don't you need to get the picture taken at an approved passport/visa place, and get it stamped?

yes when you applying to Canadaian passport, for America visiter visa you need to fill the form out online, attach a jpeg photo and setup an appointment for interview.

You can take your own canadian passport photo, its just not worth the effort as there are some VERY strict guidlines about size/lighting/background/framing/head position/expression ect.
