Smells like bullshit to me. I've never been backpacking in Europe, but I have been in the middle of shithole towns in China, and even they have internet cafes 
My sister traveled halfway around the world - Africa, Cambodia, China, Europe, Mexico, and she always had internet.
So this is either a bullshit story to promote a blog, or these people are the two dumbest fucks on Earth.

say what you want about being "whipped", but is it not common courtesy to just let them know that you're still alive and haven't gotten robbed yet?
doesn't have to be a huge email, but just something like "arrived in paris ok, see you soon" or something like that...
i've never backpacked europe, but i've backpacked all over asia before and they have internet cafes all over the place, and even small-ass ghetto hostels have free internet

A lot of people out there are dumber than you think they are. To believe that everyone has common sense is hilarious.
