As you have noticed, over the past few months wehave tried to keep you up to date with all the latest news about thefuture generation BMW 1 Series. As 2009 has been for BMW a dry year interms of new releases (just compare it with Volkswagen or Daimler), all
eyes are on the manufacturer to see what it has planned for both 2010 and 2011.

For now we bring new CGIs showing the way the 2011 1 Series will looklike. As you can see for yourselves, the five door version renderedhere shows the 1 Series will not change much in terms of overall look. The car boasts the same design cues as seen on the current series, except the front fascia.

The headlamps on the 2011 version are now sweptup, a feature which together with the restyled kidney-grille make for amore aggressive look than on the "sad" current version. The frontspoiler has also been redesigned, as the two sides of the spoiler nowcome towards the middle. The fog lamps are no longer under the spoiler, but on it and more to the center.

Some changes on the 1 Series are expected from the engines standpoint. As is the trend in the industry, BMW will go for smaller displacementturbocharged engines instead of the bigger ones. The 1 Series willshare its powerplants with the 3 Series, expected to be introduced ataround the same time. Below you can see what those engines will be:

116i - 1.35 liters I3, 122hp/190Nm
118i - 1.35 liters I3, 150hp/220Nm
120i - 1.35 liters I3, 180hp/260Nm
123i - 1.80 liters I4, 204hp/300Nm
125i - 1.80 liters I4, 240hp/350Nm
But that's not all about the future 1 Series. The German manufactureris also said to be working on a so-called "Super sport" version of the 1Series. According to some reports, the Super sport will be positionedbetween the 135iS and the future M3. A 1 Series GT version is said alsoto be in the works.

Gotcha! The BMW Z Vision Concept was caught on camera beingcarefully placed on its transport en route to the 2009 Frankfurt MotorShow. These are the first pictures of the Z Vision Concept which hasbeen rumoured for months now. At a media announcementa week ago BMW called it the EfficientDynamics Vision. Initial storiestalked of a two-seat sports car with a difference; it would use notfossil fuels but electric power for its drive systems.

What seems to be a well-covered concept turns out to give someinteresting clues as to the styling direction taken. The front grillefor example, shows a strong resemblance to that of the 2007 CS Conceptcar. The side skirts look quite innovative while the chin appears to bea little radical, even for BMW. Side mirrors are nowhere to be seen.Overall the Z Vision seems to have combined attributes from the 3Series Coupe and the CS Concept.

BMW says the production version of this sports car will serve as ashining industry example that eco-sustainability, great handling andgood design don't have to be words that never meet.

BMW Concept Vision Z Rendered
Hardly a day has gone by since pictures of the BMW EfficientDynamicsVision / Vision Z were released into the Internet. Yet well-regardedautomotive artist Jon Sibal has created a full rendering of the carbased on the covered images. It is a rushed job as you can probablytell, something the artist fully admits.

Using the trusted Photoshop digital tool Sibal went underneath thecar's skin and imagined what details could be hidden there. The frontend features an upturned kidney grille, a sharp headlight area, thetraditional BMW "Hoffmeister kink" on the C-pillar (but with a newshape surround). The rims did not impress the artist and so he replacedthem with something that was better suited to his tastes. As theconcept is missing side mirrors, so is the rendering.

Frankfurt is fast approaching and we look forward to seeing if Sibalhas kept his design mojo on this one as well. More such pictures oreven more revealing ones may yet turn up after it was reported that theleaked ones were taken subsequent to a BMWweb.tv photo shoot.

Official words from BMW indicate that the concept will redefine thesports car segment with its innovative technologies in many autospheres. Should we hold our collective breaths?

I can definitely see that orange S2k in the next transformers movie.

Optimus prime will pick it up by the wing and smash megatron with it during a fight.

I've lost hope for BMW completely.. I wonder how they'll butcher the next 3 series (or even facelift the E92)

even if the engines are turbo-charged, those tiny displacement sure are packing some big power. high strung, high lag motors perhaps?

Fixed. Since it's turbocharged, basically you should get the lowest model and chip it.

I am sure the higher hp model gets better internal and compression rate?

I hope to upgrade my car to 200hp+...but many owners claim my engine is weaker

Different turbo boost, may be... but doubt they would change the internals. Kind of like how the E90 325i, 328i and 330i share the same engine but different intakes.

I also heard things about the 1.8L engine (M271) being a lot weaker than the old M111 engine with supercharger.

hamhead 08-14-2009 12:53 AM

wow I3 making 180hp
