Actually it'd be losing money, cuz if you think about, SG has to front the cash to the hosting company, and if there was no traffic, no one would advertise, thus resulting in a NL. When you have atleast some useless posts, people know the banner ads get atleast 4 eyeballs, so they decide to advertise, and SG recoups some of his money.

;)

this is probably as close to the answer as it will ever get

how big is RS's DB? i believe the DB is about 40G's total.

how much traffic does RS take? right now, its around 3000G a month, after skinnypupp and kaostik helped refine, optimize, and make the servers more efficient, traffic dropped from around 7000G's a month, to about 3000Gs a month.

that is why im not as stressed anymore, no one likes paying for an extra 1000G's of traffic a month. at .50 each G overage.

how much bandwidth does RS have? we purchased 12.5Mbps total, 8Up, 4.5Down. (the ups and downs are referenced to the servers)

How hard is it to start a forum? not very hard, maintaining it is the issue. because we run google ads now, traffic is just as important as ever. as you have seen, the economy has hit our local vendors, thus RS has lost a lot of local support this past year.

a lot of sponsors left as well, not necessary RS giving sponsors a bad rate. In fact the new promo to advertise is actually reallly affordable. But what may be the downfall to advertise is the sponsors are just not getting enough business out of RS, even when they are doing the promos. Its a tough business afterall

!SG 08-17-2009 01:18 PM

its like with every advertising medium, you need to work it to make it work for you.

say u advertise in a newspaper, u need a flashy eye catching ad, so that ppl will spot it. there are sponsors that have gotten the idea of how to make RS work for them, and thus have made it very profitable, but if u expect to just sit there, waving a flag, rs isnt going to work for you, the internet isnt going to work for you. Ive given some pointers to sponsors on how to attack RS to yield the highest potential profits and sales. its a base like to modify from and its worked greatly for those that have taken advantage of that.

no different that operating a shop in a mall, unless you advertise where you are, what you sell, what sales you have, turn over of merchandise, store hours, what services you offer, and on top of that, have a nice looking attractive store front, no one is going to notice you. if u say "we sell stuff, and we do stuff, come check us out" that isnt gonna help either =)

RS doesn't need anybody to operate.. since 2004 its unplugged itself and became self-aware...

!SG 08-17-2009 06:55 PM

and all the members are part of the grid and are just... batteries =P
