copying drives I want to buy a new main drive and copy this one over. current drive is 120gb split 40/80 I think. and I'm going to buy a 640 or so. I have driveimage XML which I have used before but I think it locks the partitions sizes when you copy? meaning the c: on the new drive would still be 40gb. but I'd rather split the new one like 100 / 500. I used to use DOS ghost all the time back in win 98 days which would make any size you want. but don't have any of the newer versions. what can I use or how do I do this? |
Copy it with XML, then use GPartEd to resize the partitions/add more/do whatever. |
you can pick upa 1 TB drive for under $100. does your old drive have a IDE or Sata connection??? |
acronis disk director offers a clone disk function. makes a true 1:1 copy, with the option to resize partitions manually to your liking. this can be found on the hirens boot cd. |

from what I've read the smaller drivers are faster / better for C:. from what I read the WD 640 is faster then the WD 500 and 1tb so... so I was looking at the black 640. around $85 right now I'm at like 80gb used. so really 500 or 1000 is meaningless to me. I'm doing it more because this thing is over 5 years old. I want to change it before it dies. it's also seemed really slow the last few weeks. the current one is IDE but I have sata on the MB. probalby only sata I though. really I should just buy a new PC but I hate redoing them when I have a bunch of stuff installed already. I'm also just a cheap ass and generally don't spend money. |
well I just ordered the WD black 640gb from NCIX. it just went on sale I guess. it wasn't this morning. and that was the one I was going to buy anyways :D... |
