Shopping for Air tools
 

Looking for air compressor, impact wrench, ratchet and sander. Where can you buy for a reasonable price. Canadian tires stuff seems to be way overpriced. Do they have boxing day sells on these type of tools.

Also what tank size, hp, scfm i need for basic automotive work. Just basic bolt on, brakes, maybe sanding job...etc etc. :confused: I heard the oil free compressor are no good? :confused:

Having said that, I'm running a Campbell Hausfeld at my parents (20gal. oilless) 110V and a 60gal, 220V in my hobby shop. I've used the small one for everything but bodywork (air sanders use a lot of air) and no hiccups in over 10 years. The 60gal regularly runs multiple tools simultaneously, including sanders, guns, chisels, etc.. My dad bought the small one and I bought the 60gal almost new for like $300 - otherwise I would've went with Speedair.

Make sure you run a water separator between your compressor and airline to make the tools last and drain your tank at least once a month. Teflon tape all the joints. Put a drop of oil in your tools once every five uses (avg.).

For air tools there's a low, mid and high grade:

-Powermate, Powerfist, Campbell Hausfeld (CH)
-Chicago Pneumatic (CP), Ingersol Rand (IR)
-Snap On, Blue Point

90% of my tools are CP and I've never had a failure (oldest tool is 14 years old and still used regularly). Parts availability is good and tools can be rebuilt if need be.

is it better to go with ingersoll rand or chicago pneumatic for impact guns? ill be needing to get one sometime this weekend. also how about for air rachets.

Ingersoll makes pretty good shiet.

Ingersoll-Rand is definitely one of the top notch pneumatic power tools manufacturers. Some power tools are rebadged Ingersoll-Rands specifically made for that particular manufacture. Like Mac Tool's impact wrenches/guns.

Ingersoll Rand has composite in its range, however it is more expensive.. it depends what you are using it for, how much weight you can handle.. also what kind of sockets you have.

I am not sure you really need IR tools of that caliber for weekend/casual use. For high torque applications, I tend to loosen before hitting it with an impact wrench anyways.

craftsman is pretty good, wait for the sales at sears, or shop in the states, much cheaper

btw, my dad is selling a large compressor because he needs one twice as big!
