ATM thieves smash backhoe in Chevron

This is the Chevron on 41st and main st.

I heard about this in the morning yesterday but didn't know it was so close by to my commute to work.

The gas station is still blocked off with yelllow tape and the backhoe is parked on street.

Vancouver police are looking for two suspects who smashed a backhoe into a gas station in an apparent attempt to get the bank machine inside early Wednesday morning.

The would-be thieves fled on foot after failing to take the machine, leaving the backhoe stuck in the front entrance of the Chevron gas station near the intersection of 41st Avenue and Main Street.

Fortunately no one appeared to be hurt in the incident, which happened around 4 a.m. PT when the station was closed for the night.

Despite the damage, tanker-truck driver Bruce Dunbar decided to go ahead and refill the gas station tanks, but said it was one of the most unusual things he has seen in his 29 years on the job.

"I don't know what the guy was going to accomplish that was doing it, unless you drag it away … it'd be a pretty low speed chase if they were taking it away…. If he hit the pumps, there could be an issue for sure," said Dunbar.

Police said the backhoe was stolen from an East Vancouver job site.

LMAO! They think they can get away with that thing traveling at playground zone speed?

iwantaskyline 08-27-2009 02:30 AM

They probably had a truck nearby to pick them up.

this is why getting certified to operate heavy machinery is important.

Cool, thanks for posting this! I drove by Wednesday morning and saw that the gas station had police tape, with the backhoe inside. Not knowing what had happened, I was wondering "what the heck is a backhoe doing there?"

That's riiight ;)

That particular machine should do at least 50km/h. Haven't you guys seen them driving down the highway shoulders, cutting grass?

My guess is the thieves had no idea how to run that hoe (Volvohoe, LOL) or there was an alarm that scared them off. That machine should easily be able to grab the ATM and break it off its foundation. With the lack of a thumb, they might've had to chain it to the bucket before they took off.

What a stupid location to do it at anyways. Is there still a cop-shop by Oakridge? I know my dad's office (RCMP) is right off 37th and Cambie.
