Transport Canada and most Police Forces and MV Branches. University of Alberta did an extensive North American study which they presented to a national injury prevention conference last October in Vancouver. I was there and heard their presentation. I personally know of two fatals caused by cell phone talkers...useless waste of good lives. Ban both hands free and hand held. There are already enough reasons for people to NOT pay attention to their driving.

today the bus driver passed me and stopped half a block later because I shook my hand at him, got on the bus guess what - hes on his cellphone, stops his conversation to tell me I should have flagged him down when I was clearly waiting for the bus...lady gets on at the next stop, tries to ask the driver for directions, hes talking loudly on his phone to his buddy and completely ignores her, 5minutes later after being ignored he gets off the phone and asks the lady if she stills needs directions but shes already sat down and cant hear him, so he yells at her HEY LADY IM TALKING TO YOU, what a douche. /end rant

Time to call the bus company and immediately complain about his inattentive and dangerous driving.

I wonder what made them change their tune...
Old letter from the Ministry of Public Safety in response to an inquiry I made about this very subject.
Granted the Minister at the time subsequently drove like a maniac, lost his licence and somehow won re-election but this was the province's official stance on the matter just a couple of years ago: |

Have used it for people talking on cell phones as well.

I think driving while talking on a cell phone shouldnt be allowed unless youre stuck behind a train or something.
I am tired of seeing these stupid little girls yapping on their phone not knowing what their doing while driving. lol.. road rage.

I think cell-phone use while driving should be allowed providing discretion is used. Unfortunately that's asking too much from the general driving public.
There are many times when I will make a quick call while waiting in traffic for a light but will quickly end the call once I get moving again. Would that be allowed?

It's the people who don't need such regulations placed on them who will unfortunately be unfairly targeted.

It's the same with any law or regulation. I would never consider breaking into a residence, therefore the possible maximum life in jail term does not bother me.
The problem with the cell phone/texting scenario is that it is mentally impossible to give 100% of your attention to driving AND some further percentage of 100% to the texting/phone thing. Even if you try to concentrate on the driving while texting/talking on a cell, it is impossible to do give the driving what it requires...even using hands free. It;'s the mental distraction and divided concentration that is the problem.
