Marine Way and SE Marine Dr.
 

In my opinion, this is one of the most confusing place in Vancouver.

If you are traveling along SE Marine Dr (westbound) and want to turn right on Marine Way. There is a traffic light that has Green, Yellow, Red, and Green Right Arrow lights facing you in the right turn lane.

Is it okay to make a right turn when it is a red light?

First thought: Its a red light and the roadsense book says you can turn when its safe. There aren't any "No right turn when red" sign there either.

Second thought: If you can turn when its a red, then why did they bother putting up a traffic light with green right arrows to indicate it is safe to turn right? If this light is to control traffic going westbound onto Marine Way, then turning a right while its red would be the same as running a red light at a normal intersection. Wouldn't it? Otherwise, this light is completely useless, it should be replaced with a yield sign or something.

Its a paradox, while im sitting at that intersection pondering which is true.

it's pretty simple:

red: the Marine Way traffic has a green light, so you gotta stop and look first
green arrow: Marine Way West Bound traffic is getting a red light because the Eastbound Marine Way is getting their Left Turn Green Arrow. However turning LEFT onto Marine Way East bound is still not possible, hence it's red light + green right arrow, don't stop just drift thru the right bit at WOT. The light is shared for East and West goers.

Exact same situation at Minoru and Alderbridge intersection. It's just more....perpendicular.

Yeah it's as hk20000 says. If that light is red, stop and look before you turn. If you have the arrow, make sure no one's running a red, but for the most part you can cruise through without slowing.
